I've just found this message from some while back regarding accessible MP3
players. It's a bit on the long sidee, but it may give you some scope to
follow up the ARchos models being discussed.

  hello steve and will,

i'll try and answer your questions.
firstly the machines that you can load the third party firmware on to are mp3
only.
they support playback of files between 30 and 320 kbps with variable bit
rates.
the models that have a built in recorder can record at rates between 30 and
160 kbps.
the third party rockbox firmware expands the recording bit rate allowing you
to record as low as 16 kbps.
all 3 models that archos currently sell direct are 20 gb models that will
hold 500 hours of music in 128 kbps stereo. if your using the recorder model
that means you can record about 8000 hours of 16 bit mono dictation on the
drive. they do make models that will play mp3, wma and wav files but
unfortunately the rockbox firmware doesn't work on these models. the main
difference between the 2 recorder models is that the original recorder uses 4
AA rechargeable batteries giving 10 hours of use while the recorder v2 uses a
special battery that gives 12 hours of use. I BELIEVE THAT THE V2 MODEL ALSO
HAS SOME INTERNAL HARDWARE DIFFERENCES AND THAT THE BATTERY ISN'T USER
REPLACEABLE.
FOR THIS REASON I THINK THE ORIGINAL RECORDER IS THE BETTER OPTION, AS IT HAS
THE SAME CAPACITY HAS THE SAME INPUT/OUTPUT CONNECTIONS THEY ARE BOTH USB2 AND
YOU ONLY LOOSE 2 HOURS OF USE ON EACH CHARGE BUT THE BATTERIES ARE EASILY
REPLACEABLE.

AND IN FACT THE BATTERY LIFE IS BASED ON 1500 MA BATTERIES I THINK, SO YOU
COULD EASILY REPLACE THEM WITH MUCH HIGHER MA BATTERIES.
BELOW ARE THE DETAILS OF THE 2 RECORDER MODELS AND THE STUDIO MODEL WHICH IS
A PLAYER ONLY TAKEN FROM THE ARCHOS SITE.
THE PRICES ARE IN DOLLARS AND OBVIOUSLY DON'T INCLUDE SHIPPING AND IMPORT
DUTY.
I'M SURE YOU CAN GET THEM OVER HERE, AND THINK I HAVE SEEN THEM ON THE
AMAZON.CO.UK WEBSITE IN THE PAST AND I HAVE ALSO SEEN THEM ON SALE ON QVC THE
SHOPPING CHANNEL.
