Hi
The employers contribution is only applicable after the first six weeks of
starting a new job, so another words get your access to work claim in early,
the sooner the better.

Hi Michael, you have two basic choices. Either you could request an
assessment of your access needs by an Access To Work assessor. Or you could
identify a specific piece of equipment which would meet your current access
requirements. It might be, for instance, that as reading is becoming more
difficult you would find a scanner which would give you speech access to the
print material you have to read would be useful to you. ATW require employers
to make a contribution towards the cost of equipment and they won’t fund
mainstream equipment such as computers or smart phones. So any solution would
have to be an access tech one. When I last used the scheme the employer’s
contribution was set at twenty per cent.

Does anyone have experience of Access to Work? Did it help? Was it worth it?
I am partially sighted. I work mostly on a PC, but also have to refer to
printed material several times a day. For the PC I have SuperNova (2014
edition I think), and a Ruby video magnifier for the printed stuff. In the
last couple of years my sight has got worse, with missing words or parts of
words all the time. This slows me up a lot and is frustrating. The local Low
Vision Clinic could not suggest anything new, but did suggest trying Access
to Work (which I have not done before.)
But I have my doubts about whether they could make a real difference?
Any advice, suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Michael Allan
