Yes, I've probably forgot all sorts too.  I totally agree about the phones,
Jackie.  I have thought long and hard about that one.  I have two ideas.
The first is to sweet talk a supplier into long-term loans, which might
prove very difficult.  The other idea is to sell or raffle the phone after a
year , then buy a later one.  Of course, when I say 'buy', I don't
necessarily mean a brand new one.  We can buy very good second-hand ones
with at least 12 months warrantee on them.

Yes and all that, it's amazing what you forget until you read a list by
someone else.  I would be a bit cautious about phones though, they outdate
so quickly.

It does depend on the expertise to show the products, but I'd say that the
following would be very useful:

*         Smart Speakers, such as Alexa or Google, or both;

*         Android and Apple smartphones and tablets;

*         Kindel

*         I'm not a fan of the stand-alone navigation systems, such as the
Victor Treck, but many vi people swear by them;

*         Obsticle detection equipment is useful, such as the Suduband;

*         A range of canes and tips;

*         While I'm on the Victor, a range of talking book players would be
good;

*         Computers with screen readers and flatbeds to do OCR;

*         A range of magnifiers from hand-held to CCTV;

*         A high-contrast kitchen kitted out with contrasting and talking
gadgets such as double-sided chopping board and talking food thermometer and
scales;

*         Talking bathroom scales

*         Bump-on's in a range of colours and shapes;

*         Large print calendars and diarys;

*         Talking and tactile clocks and watches;

 

You'll probably need a rather large grant to cover that little shopping
list, and a couple of willing and knowledgeable assistants to show them off.

I had some input into the kind of tech that a local Society for the Blind
should have some years back when they were given a substantial amount of
money to spend.  I recommended JAWS, ZoomText and Supernova as screen
readers, a Braille note-taker, some desktop PCS, a laptop or two for
portable training, and some qwerty keyboards with stickers to help people
with partial sight.  Now, I would add NVDA, a Braille embosser, Alexa and
Google Home, a Braille display or two, a Braille note-taker and probably
other bits and pieces.  I guess it depends on how much money is available,
but what I've listed here really caters for most needs.

Hi all,

I'm putting together a list of products that should go into an access tech
room for a service that has the full range of sight impaired people. These
don't have to be specially designed products but also any mainstream
products that are beneficial.

Any ideas are most welcome, what are people's favourite products?
