Must say Andy my head's spinning a bit from this one. As I indicated in my last
post I don't actually have a cinema TV and surround sound equipment - or any
sort of multi-channel audio system.

I'd have thought recording free-to-air stuff should be much the same as now;
and people are always talking here about recording the audio component of
satellite TV. I'd imagine that recording to a DVD recorder, at least for
terrestrial material, is fine because these machines are primarily designed for
that purpose, although some have camera inputs and the like.

If you are talking about extracting surround sound from films, or surround sound
discs, then I'd imagine that's a no go area for many. Unless that is you do get
one of these 'rip anything' programs, which is illegal of course. I'm sure I'll
hear around the pubs people who will tell me how proud they are they've a
program that's cracked all this, and I live in an area where there are lots of
new riche with lots of boys toys who like boasting of such things.

As I say, I'm the last person really to comment on this, but I've no idea if and
how people are recording multi- sound tracks, if they are doing it.

My limited understanding of Vista is it may all depend on the DRM setting
slapped on the material by the copyright owners/distributors. I do know there
is much gnashing of teeth at Vista's protection scheme. Most of it from users,
but some from distributors too. channel

Be interesting to hear what the Deep Thoughts and brainboxes have to say.

Hi Ray.

I think the correct term was Nicam Pro-Logic. In any case, if I attempt to
record a movie with this sound effect, I end up with left and right stereo
only

I can see the point of this from the movie or television industry's side of
the argument, but why sell DVD recorders If we are going to be penalised in
this way. The salesperson, made no mention of this issue when he was
selling me the equipment.

I really don't mind buying the particular movies, but am I correct in
thinking that there is little information on the DVD cases themselves that
indicate that it has an AD track?

I've not been able to work in my area of employment for almost five years so
when I came into a couple of quid last year, I decided to buy this system.
I've been wanting a nice stereo/home cinema centre for years. All of my
family and friends questioned the logic of my choice , saying things like,
why do you want a big telly when you cannot see the screen! My response has
always been that the improved sound quality will make up for my lack of
vision to some extent.

Now I'm feeling a bit let down. I could have purchased a brand new Nicam
stereo Video recorder and plugged this into my Av and got a smaller display
and saved myself a packet.

So do you think that VISTA is going to limit us further, for example, will I
still be able to record BBC 2's Album Chart Show, to play in my hi-fi or
car? And will I still be able to burn the occasional CD and make a copy for
my brother? - I think I can guess at the answer to this question - Isn't
technology great!

Before I go, how about taking the audio straight from my digibox into my
computer, before it gets to my DVD recorder, will I still have left and
right stereo only?

Best wishes.
Andy
