Thanks for that one, Steve, but to be honest, that scares me too much to try ...

Hi Carol,

One final thing, go on to your motherboard manufacturer's web site, and see
if there are any updates to the USB controllers. I found doing this with
Intel cured a lot of USB problems I had.

All the best

Steve

I think George has got me where I need to be now, thanks.

I know what you mean about plugging USB's into the same ports as I do have
that issue with one item I use.

Thanks for all help. Matter now sorted ...

The other thing that occurs to me concerning the USB issue is are you
using the same USB port for anything other than a external hard drive or
card reader that doesn't require software to run?

I've found with USB wireless sticks and USB to scsci (I can never rmemeber

how to spell that word) adapter and with my IPod that you have to make
sure to plug them in to the same port and that if you try to connect
something else in to that port it doesn't always work properly.

Yes, I get an error message about drive not being available.

George may be right. I may find an eject option on the drive I'm using.
I'll look next time. Have never thought of it on the CF cards, though I
do use that option on other USB drives I have.

Carol, Having just re-read your original message I think there maybe 2
separate things going on.

If I understand you have a internal card reader that you use for Compact

flash cards? I'm not sure what the procedure for removing a CF card from

one of these is, because I think the way you are doing it removes the
whole card reader as well as the CF card. I've not used an internal card

reader before so I'm not sure how to advise you on this one. Or even if
my theory is correct.

As to the external USB issue I have seen this before but for me its
usually happened because the device wasn't properly removed.

Can I just clarify, are you getting an error message when trying to
re-insert a CF card or external hard drive? Something along the lines of

there has been an error? (smile) aren't windows error messages helpful.

Or is it that the card or hard drive just isn't being recognised.

Thanks, Usuf, but I definitely stop and remove the hardware properly.
Like you, I have occasionally come across the message that indicates
the device isn't stopped but a repeat does it.

I'm a bit foxed with this one, let me tell you.

Hi Carol, The only thing I thought was are you making sure that your
correctly removing the storage device? Do you go through the steps: 1
safely remove hardware, 2 select the device from the list, 3 tab to
stop device and then make sure that windows has given you the message
that it is safe to remove the device.

sometimes I have noticed that windows says it is unable to remove the
device and gives an ok button. but repeating the process works. I
think this is down to a program in windows stil accessing the hard
drive.

Subject: [access-uk] A PROBLEM WITH USB STORAGE DEVICE

Hi All,

Forgive me if you've seen this but I had no replies and wondered
whether the original message got through. Any help would be much
appreciated.

I'm having a problem with my USB storage device, built into the
computer, in
that, once I've stopped a device to take out a CF card (or similar),
I then
cannot insert another card of the same type and get the device going
again.
This also applies to my stand-alone USB ports and an external card
reader I
sometimes use. My only way forward seems to be to reboot. As I am
frequently wanting to use various cards, this is somewhat annoying,
to say
the least ...

I don't recall that these ports always worked like this and wonder if
something has changed (with regard to MS Services which may have
become
turned off (perhaps as various software has been introduced or
upgraded)
that are needed for my USB's to function correctly.

I haven't knowingly played with any Services and, before doing so,
would
value any thoughts as to whether a manual change made by me will
solve the
problem. If you have any suggestions, I look forward to hearing from

you.

Thanks.
