Hi Derek and all

It is irrefutable that sighted people can have access to printed local
telephone directories, therefore visually impaired people should, at the
very least, be given access to local directory enquiries. However, it would
be impractical and, in the case of mobile calls, impossible to set up a
telephone directory enquiries that would only give out local numbers.

Yes, many of us are technically able and could find alternative ways of
accessing a telephone number for free other than the 195 service. However,
there are also many more who are not able to do so and their only recourse
is to a telephone directory enquiries.

As long as there is a free way for sighted people to get a telephone number,
regardless of whether or not it is local or national, then there has to be a
way for non-technically able visually impaired people to access free
directory enquiries too.

There is also a provision in the DDA and EqA that allows for positive
discrimination of disabled people, for us to be treated more favourably than
non-disabled people. I believe that this free directory service is an
example of this.

Cheers

Barry

But Dave blind people do have a choice, why not use an internet site like
192.com that's free!

Let us say it's late at night, and the sighted person
needs a local number.
They can use paper directory free.

So it's right 195 is free for blind if the blind person wants local
number.

But what if the number is not local?
The blind person can still have it for free, why?
the sighted person must pay.

I am comparing a blind person wanting a non local
number, with a sighted person also wanting a non local number.
Regards, Derek

But a sighted person has access to directories outside their home
environment and doesn't necessarily need the service we do, which is why
ours is a need and theirs is a choice.
