No tristram, 18866 is not a directory enquiries service. It is an access number which enables you to make calls to UK landlines for just a 2p connection charge. You can stay on the phone all day for that price. One hads to register online and payment is made by credit or debit card. nection

They 18866 etc. are te new de-regulated equivolents of the old BT directory
enquiries since access was opened up a couple of years ago. If you are
registered blind you can apply to use the 195 service which I think is still
retained within BT which doesn't cost the user anything.

Some of these new services do new things like automatically text you back
the number you required or connect you etc. Generally though these new
services are a mixed blessing at least by price.

Hi Peter,

A dum question, but what are the "numbers like 18866 or 1899" numbers for?
Jim.

When you dial 1 4 7 1 and press 3 to return the call, you are normally
charged for the service. How many on this list are aware that if you are a
user of the 1 9 5 free directory enquiries service you do not have to pay
this charge. What you have to do, is dial 1 9 5 and ask to be put through
to registrations. When there, tell the person you are talking to that you
wish to register for the free call return service. Once registered, instead
of pressing 3 you press star 3. Of course, I am sure that most of you are
using access numbers like 18866 or 1899 in order to get cheap calls. In this
instance having the free call return service won't really be of much use but
register anyway
