Let's assume you don't have one of those fancy talking wireless phones that
let you send text messages via your phone to others. These are called SMS
messages in the industry, but for the purposes of preserving plain English,
I'll just refer to them as text messages here.

You don't need an accessible wireless phone to send someone a text message.
You just need their 10-digit phone number, and you need to know who their
wireless phone provider is. Let me give you a couple of examples:

Let's say you have a friend who is addicted to texting, so much so that she
prefers to use her phone to receive and send text messages over using her PC
to send and receive e-mail. You can now send a text message to your friend
as follows: If your friend is a sprint user, send an e-mail to:

number@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Instead of the word number in the e-mail address, type in your friend's
10-digit number. So you might try: 6147358688@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
By the way, that won't work if you use that exact phone number in the
example above. Just remember to use your friend's 10-digit number--the area
code and the seven digit phone number.

Fill in the subject line and then type your message just as you would if you
were sending an e-mail. Send the message, and it appears on your friend's
wireless phone as a text message.

Of course, the down side is, your friend will have to e-mail you back or
give you a voice call, but this at least lets you send out a text if you
need to in a bit of an emergency. Here are some other carriers with their
addresses. Remember to substitute the word number with the actual 10-digit
phone number of whomever you're calling, and don't put in any dashes or
parentheses in the number. Just use the straight 10 digits in front of the
at sign.

Happy texting, even if it is only one way.
