It seems like one month I'm on a rampage and the next month
I'm all warm and fuzzy. (hormones?)  Anyway, this time of year, the warm
and fuzzy part of me seems to emerge, so bear with me.

I also seem to have added love to my life recently, so I am one sappy
character right now.

With all of this sap and love in my heart, I just want to tell you all
how much I appreciate you.  My Fleet....how special you all are to me.

A faq I get is "Is there a way to remove frames from web sites I visit?"
The answer is yes and it's very easy.  If a website includes frames
without a "no frames" option, all you have to do is right click inside
the frame and go to Properties.  There you will see the Address (URL) of
the page.  Simply drag your mouse across the URL to select it and copy
and paste it into your browser's address bar, and press Enter. And
that's it. The page should then open up without any frames.

Here's a simple little trick that may solve your problem with IE windows
not opening to maximum size anymore.  Click
Start>Run and enter start /max  followed by the URL of  your
home page or any web page (make sure it's closed) ...
(ie:  start /max http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WinTips-Tricks ) Press
Enter - your home page will now open maximized and from then on IE will
always open maximized.

My article this month does not apply only to Outlook in a networked
environment. It concerns the greatest danger of using e-mail =96 the
possibility of your PC being infected by a virus, a worm or a Trojan
horse. For simplicity, I will refer to them all as viruses. The problem
of viruses in e-mail and e-mail attachments affects anyone who receives
e-mail, no matter what program they use. Outlook, however, is the
biggest target of virus writers since it is the most widely used e-mail
program in the world.

What are worms, viruses, and Trojan horses?

 A Worm is a program that operates independently (it does not attach
itself to other programs), leaves destruction in its path, such as
re-formatting your hard drive, deleting system files, opening security
portals, etc., and may be able to transmit itself, via networks, e-mail,
or the Internet, to other locations.

A Virus is a program that searches out programs and infects them by
embedding a copy of itself in them. When these programs are run, the
embedded virus is run too, thus spreading the infection and damage. This
normally happens invisibly to the user. Unlike a worm, a virus cannot
infect other computers without assistance. It is spread by such things
as opening e-mail attachments or downloading infected files from the
internet. Some particularly nasty viruses do irreversible damage, like
deleting all the user's files.

A Trojan Horse is a computer program that carries a hidden virus or
worm. It may be a free game program, a low cost version of a popular
program, or even a new disk from a manufacturer.

A Hoax is simply a lie about a mythical virus. The intent of the creator
of a hoax is to spread the lie as widely and as long as possible.

There are four sources that can introduce viruses to your computer =96
removable media (floppy disks, Zip disks & CDs), the Internet, e-mail, &
networks.  In order to absolutely avoid getting and spreading computer

1.     Never open an e-mail.
2.     Never use the Internet.
3.     Never use any removable media.
4.     Never network your computer.

If you follow these rules you will never, ever get a virus.  You will
also be doing business like it was done 15 years ago, so obviously these
rules are not workable!

E-Mail is the culprit.

The most common method of infection today is e-mail. And,
just when you thought you were safe from viruses if you did
not open e-mail attachments, along comes a smarter worm.  Just
highlighting an e-mail in your inbox or having Outlook set for
previewing can activate a worm. No human interaction is required!
Windows has the ability to run scripts and controls automatically.
Outlook Express, and in some case, Outlook, will automatically activate
certain types of files just because they are in the viewing windows and
therefore, considered active.

It is dangerous to preview e-mail because the preview itself can
activate some types of worms. Virus writers know this, which is why they
are now creating these more advanced types of worms that run

It's much safer to use Outlook than  Outlook Express. Think about how
you have to double click on a picture and view it in another application
when using Outlook. But, if you use Outlook Express, you'll see it right
away because Outlook Express will activate the .jpg or .gif file.
Outlook, however,  has been designed for corporate use as part of the
Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft seems to pay more attention to
security in that program than in Outlook Express, which comes free with
Windows and Internet Explorer. So if you have Outlook, use it
- it=92s safer.

What can you do to protect against these new viruses?

1.  Use a good anti-virus software and update the definitions weekly (or
immediately if you hear of a new virus infection).

2.  Be suspicious of all attachments, even if they are from your Mother!
Most of today=92s e-mail viruses are propagated by the virus sending
itself to everyone in the address books on your computer. Whose address
books are you in? The address books of your friends, relatives, and
business associates, that=92s whose. So if any of them happens to open =
infected e-mail, you will be one of the recipients of the virus laden
e-mail. And who is more likely to open an infected e-mail, your mother -
who probably just l earned how to turn on a computer, or you =96 with =
your computer savvy?  In this case, you can=92t even trust your own

3.  Do not open any files with a double file extension such as
loveletterforyou.txt.vbs and make sure Windows is configured to show the
file extensions for ALL file types.

4.  Many viruses are disguised as jokes, pictures, or pleas for help.
These types of e-mails should be treated with extra suspicion.

5.  Configure your virus scan so you can scan all e-mail and attachments
from within Microsoft Outlook. Do not save attachments to your hard
drive before scanning them. That used to be the safest way, but it can
activate some worms.

6.  Be careful about what files you download from the Internet and scan
any file you download before you open it.

7.  Don=92t have unprotected SEX. (Software EXchange).  Scan any =
or CD you receive from someone else before opening it.

8.  Configure Outlook to send you a confirmation for each e-mail you
have sent.

If you work at home, make sure that you follow the same procedures there
that you do at work. Viruses can easily be brought into a network by
work that has been done on a home PC.

How can you tell if you are infected?

Look for these warning signs:

1.  You get confirmations for e-mails you did not send.

2.  Your system seems unusually slow or certain programs will not run.

3.  You have hardware problems such as stuck keys that repeat the same
character over and over, keyboard locking in CAPS mode, black rectangles
appearing on the screen at random, system lock-ups, etc.

4.  You have software problems such as program lockups for no reason,
menu items react strangely, mode indicators like "CAPS LOCK" stop
working, etc.

5.  Error messages like "Incompatible file error" or "Not enough
memory," appear for no apparent reason.

6.  You get unusual messages on your monitor, such as =93Hacked by

What do you do if you strongly suspect you are infected and are in a
corporate environment?

1.     Turn off your computer. DO NOT click Start>Shut Down>
Shut Down the Computer. That takes too long. Simply push the power
button and hold it until the computer shuts off. This will prevent
continued spread of the virus.

2.     Inform your IT department immediately and let them handle
the problem. Do not panic or interrupt other users.

What if your company does not have its own IT department?
What if you are infected with a virus on your home PC? What should you

1.     The first thing to do when you realize you are infected is
to disconnect your computer from your Internet connection. This will
limit the spread of the virus. If you have an =93always on=94 =
such as a network, cable modem, or DSL, physically unplug the connection
from your PC.

2.     If your virus definitions are up to date and you simply
neglected to scan an attachment, scan it now to determine which virus
has infected your computer.

3.     If you need to update your definitions in order to scan for
the virus, try to download the definitions using another computer and
transfer them to your PC using diskettes or a CD.

4.     Once you have determined the name of the virus, find the
removal instructions on the website of your anti-virus software (again,
using another computer), and follow them step-by-step. It is very
important to follow the instruction precisely. If you skip a step, you
can exacerbate the problem. Be very careful when making changes to the
registry and other system files. You can inadvertently do more damage
than the virus if you delete the wrong file.

What about virus hoaxes?

There has been a proliferation of viruses in the computer world (over
50,000), and now we have a proportionately large proliferation of virus
hoaxes. If you receive a virus warning by e-mail how can you determine
if it is a legitimate warning or a hoax? If you have an IT department,
forward the virus warning to them. They can confirm whether or not it is
a hoax.

Isn=92t it better to be safe than sorry? Shouldn=92t you warn all your
co-workers, friends, and relatives? NO!

Do not forward these warnings to anyone else. If you forward the warning
to 25 people and each of them send it to 25 people, and they each send
it to 25 people, and they each send it to 25, and they each send it to
25, the result is 9,765,625 e-mails! If it takes each person 60 seconds
to read the message, that is 162,760 hours spent reading the hoax
message. At a pay rate of just $15.00 per hour, that is a cost of
$2,441,400 in lost productivity! Additionally, all those e-mails clog
the worlds e-mail systems with junk messages.

How can you recognize a hoax?

Remember these 10 warning signs:

1.  The number one warning sign is the fact that the virus warning
arrived by e-mail. Unless you are subscribed to a reputable anti-virus
mailing list, you will probably not receive valid virus warnings through

2.  Valid virus warnings do not come from =93a friend of a friend of a
friend who heard it from a reliable source=94. They are instead sent by
various anti-virus companies and government agencies directly to the
news media.

3.  The request to "send this to everyone you know" or some variation of
that statement. This should raise a red flag that the warning is
probably a hoax. No valid warning from a credible source will tell you
to send it to everyone you know.

4.  =93THIS IS NOT A HOAX!=94 Many hoaxes put this statement somewhere =
the body of the message. If it says it=92s not a hoax, it couldn=92t be =
hoax, right?

5.  The statements that this is the =93worst virus ever=94 and will
=93completely erase your C drive=94 or that =93there is NO remedy for it =
this time=94 are typical hoax phrases.

POINTS!!!! URGENT!!!!! WARNING!!!!!!! The message must be
true if it has a lot of caps and exclamation points, right?

7.  =93The warning was announced by IBM, Microsoft, AOL, or another well
known technology company.=94 This gives the message credibility, except
that IBM, Microsoft, and AOL do not issue virus warnings.

8.  Meaningless technical jargon in the message, such as this from the
=932400 Baud Modem Virus=94: "The virus distributes itself on the modem
sub-carrier present in all 2400 baud and up modems. The sub-carrier is
used for ROM and register debugging purposes only, and otherwise serves
no other purpose. The virus sets a bit pattern in one of the internal
modem registers, but it seemed to screw up the  other registers on my
USR. A modem that has been 'infected' with this virus will then transmit
the virus to other modems that use a subcarrier. The virus then attaches
itself to all binary incoming data and infects the host computer's hard
disk. The only way to get rid of this virus is to completely reset all
the modem registers by hand, but I haven't found a way to vaccinate a
modem against the virus, but there is the possibility of building a
subcarrier filter.

9.  =93The virus was just discovered yesterday=94 or =93not many people =
about it=94. You are one of the first to hear about it - how lucky is

10. If the story sounds familiar, then it is probably a hoax. Many
hoaxes use almost identical terminology in the messages. The creator of
the hoax most likely copied it from an old, successful hoax.

The following is an actual virus hoax e-mail. Many thousands of people
have forwarded the "Budweiser Frog" virus hoax to other e-mail users,
thus keeping it in circulation for years. See how many of the hoax
warning signs it has:

Someone is sending out a very cute screensaver of the Budweiser Frogs.
If you download it, you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash
and someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password!


It just went into circulation yesterday. Please distribute this message.
This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it.

This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. Please
share it with everyone that might access the Internet.

Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in your address book
so that this may be stopped. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous
virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.
If a virus warning you receive passes the warning signs test, you should
still verify it before forwarding it. You can check with one of the
sites that debunk hoaxes and urban legends, such as:







As you can see, using e-mail makes you a target of virus and hoax
writers. Is e-mail worth all the trouble? Apparently so, since it is
used by hundreds of millions of people around the world and many
businesses could not even function without e-mail. Are some e-mail
programs more secure than others? Certainly, but none are secure if you
do not take these precautions and exercise some common sense.

So, as Sgt. Phillip Esterhaus, of Hill Street Blues always says: "Let's
be careful out there."

~ Presentation is Everything ~

As the title says, presentation is everything.  What good is all the
data in the world, if you can not present it in a format that is useful
to the reader.  Access provides a fantastic tool for presenting your
data.  For those of you who have been following along with the monthly
articles, you should now have a well-designed database complete with
Tables, for storing the data, Forms, for inputting the data (
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/james5.htm ) and controlling what
data is viewed, and queries (
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/james6.htm ) to narrow the data
to a usable subset of data.  All of this is nice but you need to be able
to present your data in a meaningful manner and this is where reports
come in.

Access gives you a number of options in creating a new report. First,
there is Design View, which lets you create your report from the ground
up.  This can be an extremely tedious process but sometimes is the best
option.  Next is the Report Wizard. This is one of the best Wizards
Access has to offer.  It will walk you through the steps of getting your
data into a presentable form and then actually put it into that form.
Next is the AutoReport feature.  This will create a very generic report
in one of two styles for you.  The Chart Wizard walks you through using
your data to create a dynamic chart.  And, last, but certainly not
least, the Label Wizard walks you through creating sheets of labels from
your data.  Let=92s take a look at all of these in a little more detail.

Design View

This is a tool best used until you have some experience with the report
creating tools.  When you open a new report in design view you have a
completely blank template.  There are three elements in the basic
template, the Page Header, Detail and Page Footer sections.  Additional
Sections are available as well.  These include; Report Header, Report
Footer, Section Headers and Footers, and even sub-reports.  Each of
these is fairly obvious where it appears in the report so we won=92t go
into too much detail on that.

Many design elements are available to the developer as you create your
custom report.  As with Forms there is a toolbox available that includes
most of the familiar elements.  There is a wand with little stars coming
out of it as the second icon on the toolbox.  When this icon is selected
and one of the design element buttons is clicked a wizard comes up to
walk you through using and placing that element.  Let=92s look at what =
have to work with.

Label =96 This element places a static label on your report.   These
are used for column headings, and identifiers.

Text Box =96 This is the key piece of a report.  It holds your dynamic
data.  You can either enter what is to be displayed in this field as
dynamic (i.e. the date) or to include a field from your data source.
Functions can also be used in these fields. What they do depends upon
their placement.

Option Group =96 This is available but not used.  Access designers =
to have simply reused the Forms toolbox and this is a remnant of that.

Toggle Button =96 This is available but not used.  Access designers =
to have simply reused the Forms toolbox and this is a remnant of that.

Option Button =96 This is available but not used.  Access designers =
to have simply reused the Forms toolbox and this is a remnant of that.

Combo Box/List Box =96 These options allow you to use data that is in a
combo or list box in your data source and include the linked data rather
than the actual data in the field.

Command Button =96 This is available but not used.  Access designers
appear to have simply reused the Forms toolbox and this is a remnant of

Image =96 Allows you to place an image in your report.

Unbound/Bound Object Frames =96 These allow you to enter images into =
report.  The format used here should match that used in the report.
Unbound should be used for frequently updated items, Bound for static
items or those that are rarely updated.

Page Break =96 This one obviously allows you to create a page break at a
specific point in your report.

Tab Control =96 This is available but not used.  Access designers appear
to have simply reused the Forms toolbox and this is a remnant of that.

Sub Report =96 This allows you to enter a whole report as a subset of =
current report.

Line/Rectangle =96 These are drawing elements that allow you to give =
report the look that you want it to have.

Now that you know what each of the design elements is, you can use them
a little more knowledgeably.  In addition to all the various types of
objects within your report, there is a multitude of properties available
for each element.  These include font and background colors, shading,
visible properties, background and border styles, and even font size.
An important note here, an additional tool available to Access 2000
users and above is Conditional formatting.  This can also be
accomplished through code in Access 97, the key here is to turn off
whatever you do if the row does not meet the necessary criteria.

Using the Design View you have to place each one of the elements above
and set them as you want them.  This will take time but can be very
rewarding as you can get your report to look exactly as you want it to.
This will also be necessary to do your report this way if you have too
many elements coming together into one report. The key thing to remember
is that anything you include in the detail section will be included in
your final report for each row in your data source.

Report Wizard

The report wizard is the best wizard available in Access.  It will walk
you step by step through creating a report.  Let=92s follow the steps

First, we need to select a data source.  This can be either a table or a
query.  Bear in mind that all rows from whatever data source you select
will be included in your report.  Also on the first page is the
selection of the fields to include in your reports.  You can select them
individually or all of them at once.  It is not necessary to include all
fields in your report.  Once all of your selections have been made,
click Next and you are taken to the Grouping Page.  You can select up to
four levels of grouping.  Grouping takes your data and puts it into
smaller groups of like data. Grouping Options allows you to select how
items are grouped, for text fields you can select normal, meaning the
whole thing must match or anywhere from the first to the first 5
initials. Dates can be grouped individually or into months, quarters,
years and so on.  The same date field can be selected multiple times and
grouped by Month and then by Day.  When you have your grouping options
selected, click Next and you are taken to the Sorting page.  Remember
when sorting that the fields you select here will be the first fields to
appear in your report, regardless of the order you selected earlier.
You can again select up to four fields to sort on and whether you want
them sort in Ascending or Descending order.  If one of your fields
contains numeric data, there is also a Summary Options button available
on this screen.  The Summary Options allow you to add a field in a
section and report footers to give you the Sum, the average the minimum
or maximum value.  If you are wondering about why Count is omitted, it
is automatically done when you do these calculations.  You are also
given the option on this extra page of including the detail or just
getting a summary of your data. This allows you to simply view the
totals and not the detail records for each section you have made.  When
you have made your selections, click Next and the Layout page.  The
Layout page allows you to select the orientation of your report on the
page and one of six layouts.  A nice sample of what the selected layout
will look like appears on the page.  Next we come to the Style Page.
There are six default styles and you can create custom styles of your
own.  As with the layout page, an image of the selected style appears on
the page.  Finally we come to the Title page.  Here you give your report
a title (also the name it will appear as in the database) and whether
you want to
immediately view the report or view it in Design mode.    I
highly recommend selecting Modify the reports Design.  When
you do this, it immediately saves the report and shows the layout in
design view.  If you select Preview your Report, it runs your query and
if something happens before the report is completed, you will lose your
work on the report.  Also in Design mode all of the functions available
to you in the custom design above are again available to you here.


AutoReport as the name implies automatically creates the report for you.
You select the data source and then when you click on the selection it
goes through and automatically creates your report in the Style selected
(either columnar or tabular). There are no other options here,
everything in your data source is selected and no grouping or summary is
available.  This obviously is extremely limited.

Chart Wizard

The Chart Wizard is another of the powerful tools available in Access.
It walks you through chart creation.  Let=92s venture together through =
wizard.  First we select our data source then the Chart Wizard Option.
Our first stop on the Chart Creation tour is to select our fields.
Simply select the fields you want to include and click next.  The next
page can appear overwhelming at first.  It is simply a graphical
depiction and a short summary of the twenty graphs available to choose
from. Once you find the one that best suits your needs and select it,
click next.  The Next page allows you to set your graphs options. Then
it is on to the Naming screen.  The naming screen varies from that of
the Report Wizard only in that it gives you the option to include your
legend or not.  A pretty simple, but powerful tool.

Label Wizard

The Label Wizard allows you to select whatever data you so choose from
your data source and create a label out of it. When selected it will
walk you through the creation.  The first step is to select your label.
You can select from number of standard Avery labels.  Next you choose
your font, its size, color and weight.  You also have the option of
italics and underlining.  As with many Access wizard option pages, you
get the handy dandy sample section of the page to show you what your
selections will look like on your label.  Next comes the construction of
you label.  This includes both adding fields from your data source and
typing in characters you would like to appear. A sorting option page to
allow you to sort them to make finding a specific label easier follows
this.  Last of course is the naming page.  This is a very useful tool
and I have personally seen it used for everything from the customary
mailing label to creating custom Asset Tags.

Wrapping It All Up

Reports make your data easier to present to someone else. Access gives
you many options in creating your reports, enabling you to customize
them to best suit your needs.  Access seems to put its best foot forward
in the section that is designed to show to someone else.  The Wizards in
the report section are by far the best in the database.  By practicing
with the Report Wizard and doing further customization with the design
tools, you can be making professional looking reports in no time!

(Headers and Footers and Letterhead Part II)

In Part I we looked at getting different headers and footers for
different pages. In this part we'll take an overview of how to use
styles in constructing a good letterhead template. Some of this is based
on analysis of the templates that come with Word, some on tips from
Woody Leonhard, and a lot on the writings and analysis done by John
McGhie in his web article "How to Create a Template - Part II."

Background: Templates.

A letterhead template is a document template. This is to distinguish it
from a global template or Add-In. Like other document templates, it can
be stored anywhere but is most useful if stored in a templates folder
because it can be found by the File New dialog or the Letter wizard if
stored in a designated templates folder location. There are two
designated locations for templates folders in Word, the User Templates
folder and the Workgroup Templates folder. These folders can be named
anything at all and can contain subsidiary folders to organize your
templates. When you initially save something as a template in Word, the
default location will be your User Templates folder. For more background
on templates, kinds and storage, see Template Basics.

Background: Styles in Microsoft Word.

Styles are at the heart of how Word works and if you don't
have a firm grasp on how they work, you will be fighting Word every time
you use it. In my opinion anyone who designs templates to be used by
others should be using only styles for formatting in that template.
Using direct formatting (not by creating or modifying styles) should
lead to public humiliation, scolding, corporal punishment, up to
flogging in the town square for repeat offenders! This is strong
language from a criminal defense attorney who believes that there are
redeeming qualities in (or at least possible in) any human being.

Hopefully this column will give you some feel for how styles can work
for you if you will take the time to learn how they work. Even if you do
nothing with letterhead templates, going through the steps to use styles
effectively in letterhead will give you a sound grounding in using them
well in other kinds of templates and documents.

Background: Letterhead.

Letterhead templates can be a great tool for exploring Word features,
because they can use so many of them to great advantage. I have spent
far too much time trying to design good computer-generated or computer
tolerant letterhead. I'm trying to pass on some of the mistakes I've
made in doing that on to you so that you can spend your time doing more
productive or fun things. So now, let's take a look at what goes into a
letter and how styles can be used in a letterhead template to make
typing the letter easy.

What goes into a letter? What is the purpose of letterhead?

A letter is a more-or-less formal communication that has expected and
optional parts to it. There are various formats for letters that we
won't go into here. A letterhead conveys several things. First, it
conveys standard information - the name and address - the telephone
number(s), perhaps names of contact people, officers, or partners.
Second, it conveys an image. Take a look at the letterheads you receive
and think about which ones convey which impression. Try to model your
letterhead to convey the feeling you want people receiving your letters
to have.

Preprinted or computer generated?

This is a matter of personal preference. However, if you use preprinted
letterhead, use something that will work with your printer. The
themograph raised-ink letterhead melts in laser printers. It can gum up
the works and the laser printer flattens the print.

What goes in the non-letterhead portion of the letter?

The typed part of the letter will have, at a minimum:
 *a date line
 *internal address for recipient
 *greeting (salutation) line

Optional parts include:
 *attention line
 *reference line
 *reference initials
 *copy line
 *enclosure line
 *continuation page headers/footers

If you take a look at the templates that ship with Word, you'll find
that there are different styles associated with these different letter
parts. This is an important tip and one of the few good things about
those templates. In designing a letterhead, try to use the same style
names that Word uses for it's templates because it may make it possible
for you to use the letter wizard with your templates if you want to. It
will also give you appropriate access to AutoText entries that come with
Word. AutoText is style-sensitive.

Styles for the typed portion of a letter:

The styles in a Word template for these parts include:
 *Date (followed by Inside Address Name)
 *Reference line (followed by Mailing Instructions)
 *Mailing Instructions (followed by Inside Address Name)  *Inside
Address Name (followed by Inside Address)  *Inside Address  *Attention
line (followed by Salutation)  *Salutation (followed by Subject line)
*Subject Line (followed by body text)  *Body Text  *Closing (followed by
signature)  *Signature (followed by Signature Job Title)  *Signature Job
Title (followed by Signature Company)  *Signature Company (followed by
reference initials)  *Reference Initials (followed by Enclosure)
*Enclosure (followed by Cc list)  *CC list

Other key styles in the letterhead include:
 *Envelope Address (We'll deal with the envelope styles in
a separate article but it is important to keep in mind that they live in
the letterhead template.)  *Envelope Return  *Footer  *Header

In this listing I've included the "followed by" styles where they differ
from the style itself. Note that they often do differ. This helps
automate your letterhead because it automatically imposes the correct
style for the next line. Mailing instructions won't appear in your
letter unless you call up one of the AutoText entries for that purpose,
but if you do, it comes before the Inside Address Name. The Inside
Address Name is set up to include space before the paragraph. The Inside
Address style does not (so the inside address stays in a block). Every
section of the letter that will serve a different purpose has a
different style name (even if the formatting of the text in that style
is not any different).

I urge you to call up the built-in templates and play with these styles
to see how they work. Then take a look at the "click-and-type" fields
they've built into the templates.

Click-and-Type Fields

Let me diverge a moment from the discussion of styles to bring up these
fields. If click in one, the entire field (which may contain
instructions or pointers) is selected. When you type, it disappears and
you are left with what you typed. You can use the F11 key to skip to the
next field when you are typing. These fields are MacroButton fields and
you can make your own by typing them. The "syntax" is:

MacroButton NoMacro Text to appear as prompt.

Note that there are no quotation marks. The upper-and-lower-case typing
is a convention to make these easier to read. Microsoft often uses all
caps. If you click in one of these fields and press Shift-F9 (toggle
field codes) you'll see something very much like this, except that it
will have "field delimiter" characters around it.

{ MacroButton NoMacro Text to appear as prompt. }

When the codes are toggled back, what you see is your prompt:

This may or may not be shaded on your screen, depending on
your view settings, but if you click in it, the entire prompt will be
selected. If you want to try typing one of your own, simply type the
codewords "MacroButton NoMacro" followed by your short prompt text.
(Prompt text is limited to a single line of text as displayed.) Then
select everything from "MacroButton" through the end of your prompt.
Press Ctrl-F9 and Word will put what you've typed inside the special
field delimiters. Press F9 and only your prompt should be showing. Note
that you can't just type those delimiters in, even though they look very
much like the { } braces characters on your keyboard, they are not the
same. Another way to insert them is to use Insert =3D> Field from your

Anyway, these MacroButton fields are how Microsoft makes up
for the limitations on the "followed by" setting for styles. It puts the
text for certain parts of the letter into the proper style and puts a
MacroButton prompt there to make it easy to be typing in the correct
style for that letter part. Let's take a look at how we can use those
styles in constructing a good continuation header for our letter forms.

Using the StyleRef field in the Continuation Page header

You can use the styles built into your letter template to put the
information you type in the second page header of the typed letter
without ever entering that header while you are typing! You do this by
using a StyleRef field. There are three key items of information that
normally appear on the first page of the letter that would be nice in
the header. The first is the date, the second is the addressee, and the
third is the subject of the letter. You may have noticed that each of
these has its own style.

For now, start a letter using one of the built-in templates. Type in a
name and address for the addressee. Make sure that the name has a style
of "Inside Address Name." Make sure the address is in the style "Inside
Address." Type your greeting where it says to do so and press the
carriage return. Type a
subject like "Re:    Past Due Account." Even though Microsoft's
built-in style for this is ALL CAPS, use your Shift key where
appropriate, just as if you were typing without all caps. You don't
think this letter will go out until next Tuesday, so go up to the date
and change the date to when you expect to send the letter. Now let's see
how we can have that information automatically inserted into our
continuation page header.

Last month we looked at putting a header on the second and subsequent

Let's access that header now.  View =3D> Headers and Footers... If it =
"First-page Header," then we need to close the header/footer view,
insert a temporary manual page break
(Ctrl-Enter) and go back into the header-footer view. You should now see
the header box displayed.

Type "Letter to " and then press Ctrl-F9 to insert our field delimiters
and then (between the delimiters) type:

StyleRef "Inside Address Name"

Press F9 to toggle back to the field "result" which should show your
addressee's name! Press the Tab key twice to go to the right margin.
Type "Page " and insert a field for your page number. You can do this
using the header/footer toolbar or you can use Ctrl-F9 and type Page
(followed by F9 to update the field). Press your Enter key to end the
paragraph and start the next line. Here insert a StyleRef field for the
"Subject Line" style except follow the style name with "\* CharFormat".

{ StyleRef "Subject Line" \* CharFormat }

Press F9 to update. Your subject line should appear, typed in caps and
lower-case. Finally, let's put in the field for the date, again using a
StyleRef field, this time to the "Date" style. We could use a DATE or a
CREATEDATE field for this but doing so makes it more likely that you
will send out a letter that has one date on page one and a different
date in the headers for your other pages! When you're done, your header
should look something like:

Letter to Mr. George Smith                            Page 2
Re: Past-Due Account
December 13, 2001

If you press Alt-F9 to toggle the display of field codes, what you'll
see instead is something like:

Letter to { StyleRef "Inside Address Name" }      Page { Page }
{ StyleRef "Subject Line" \* CharFormat }
{ StyleRef "Date" }

Well, that was sure a lot of work to get something that could be typed
in a minute! Yes, it was, but the idea is to build it into your letter
form templates so that you'll never have to even think about it again.
Leave the document open for now and we'll practice on one of the
built-in templates again.

Use File =3D> New to call up one of the templates under Letters & Faxes.
This time, though, click in the lower right corner of the dialog box to
create a new template instead of a document. In this template, click
where it says "Dear Sir or Madam:" and then press the End key to get
past the MacroButton field. Press the Enter key to get into the subject
line style. Type "Re: " Then type in a MacroButton field of your own for
the subject line. (The reason for doing this is that if we are going to
have a reference to the Subject Line style in the header, the letter
must have something in it that uses that style, at least when the letter
is finished. The template doesn't have to have anything there, but the
error message that will show up can be distressing if you don't
understand what is going on.)

Next get into the header/footer and copy our header from the document we
were just working on into the Header for our new template. It will
probably look something like this when pasted into the new template:

The StyleRef field doesn't display the results (prompts) of MacroButton
fields. When the template is used, though, the text that replaces them
will show up. Use the header/footer toolbar page setup button to change
the setup for headers and footers to "different first page" and your
header will disappear. Save and close your template. When you save it,
if there is not already a folder named "Letters & Faxes" create one.
Save your template in that folder with the name "My Letterhead."

Then  use File =3D> New and test out your letter template. It should be
under the tab for Letters and Faxes. Type in an addressee name and a
subject. Then, in the body portion, press Ctrl-Enter to force a new
page. Use Print Preview to take a look at your continuation page header.

Play with this. You now have the tools to create a decent letterhead
template. I suspect that this is enough for your brains, for now. In
Part III (which may be next month) we'll take a closer look at the
header and footer toolbar and its AutoText component. Again, here is

Dust out those cobwebs with a weekly sweep.

Doing site cleaning IS a chore, however it WILL save you valuable time,
provide more mbs for your buck, and in doing it every week will make you
rest easy your web is as shipshape and pristine as can be.

So what can you do?

What are the benefits of having a clean well-maintained site?

Would you want your visitors to find your old files? Last year's prices?
How embarrassing. Keep your customers from coming across old outdated or
just simply incorrect information.

The web site is much easier to work with when you don=92t have =
files that get in the way and it=92s much easier to find a file in, say, =
group of 20 than 40 files.

Finally, FrontPage works much more smoothly and quickly when there are
fewer files on the site. This is because FrontPage works by loading a
=91list=92 of all the files in the web site when you first open it.

NOTE: Before you start on your spring clean, you should note that
deleting a file through FrontPage is the end of the file and you won=92t
find it sitting in your recycle bin later. This is a NON-REVERSIBLE
step. So it is important you are sure you want to delete files. If you
think you may need them later the simple thing to do is either keep back
ups of the files or just publish the whole unchanged web as a back up
copy on your hard drive.

FrontPage 2000:
File | Save As and browse to a back up web for individual files.

FrontPage 98:
In the FrontPage explorer, select the file to be copied. Go to File |
Export. In the save as box, browse to a location on your hard drive that
is convenient for you and then click the Save button.

NOTE: You should do the following before starting your maintenance

If your web contains files located in hidden folders, those files will
not be seen by you. To rectify this Go to Tools | Web Settings | click
the Advanced tab, and then select the =91Show documents in hidden
directories=92 check box. Press Ok.

Recalculate Hyperlinks:

Have you done this before? You should do this before EVERY publish, this
is because your Search and TOC (Table of Contents) will not reflect your
recent changes and will still point to old deleted files. Recalculating
also updates other data in FrontPage, such as deleting unused themes and
it updates the hyperlink display (as the name suggests), which is
essential when working in a multi-author environment.

To help you remember to recalculate hyperlinks you can configure
FrontPage to remind you. Go to Tools | Options | General and tick =
when included components are out of date=92 and =91Warn when text index =
out of date=92 press ok.  When you next open your web if you have made
changes to hyperlinks or added files FrontPage should warn you.

FrontPage automatically tracks and repairs any internal hyperlinks in
your web whenever you move, rename, or delete a file, but what about
external links?

NOTE:   Before verifying hyperlinks, you should save all open pages.

A broken hyperlink is one that has an invalid destination URL and will
return an error if the site visitor clicks the hyperlink.

A hyperlink might have an invalid URL for various reasons; you might
have mistyped it, or, if the destination page is on another World Wide
Web site, the page might have been changed or removed. Sometimes
FrontPage thinks the URL is invalid when it is not, this might be
because the URL is part of a JavaScript or has a redirect on it.

In Reports View click Broken Hyperlinks then Verify Hyperlinks on the
Reporting toolbar. Before you do this it is best to click the 'In Page'
column to group the broken links into their specific pages this way you
can work on the same page til you're finished.

Double-click a hyperlink with broken status. To display the page to edit
it, click Edit Page. If you know the correct URL of the destination,
edit it in the Replace hyperlink with box. Or, click Browse to browse to
the page or file in a web, file system, or World Wide Web. To repair
other occurrences of this hyperlink in all pages in the current web,
click =91Change in all pages=92. To repair other occurrences of this
hyperlink in selected pages, click =91Change in selected pages=92, and =
select the pages. Click Replace. If the destination is valid, the
hyperlink is no longer displayed in the Broken Hyperlinks report.

To find out how to print a list of the broken hyperlinks in FrontPage
2000 see my article in Volume 2 of this newsletter.

For FrontPage 98 this works in the same way only the =91Link To=92 =
does not contain 'clickable links'.

For FrontPage 2002 you can now copy the reports.  Read this.

I suggest you right click on the file when saved in folder view and
click don=92t publish so the file won=92t add to your server space.

NOTE:  In a Web site based on SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft,
hyperlinks in document libraries and interactive lists are created and
managed automatically.

The _private folder Sweep

The _private folder is the place where your forms (if you have
any) will by default store the results of entries submitted. No one can
see your _private folder but you, (they would need your id and password)
so anything in here that you don=92t want can be deleted. If you still
want to keep it but don=92t wish it on the server you can simply right
click the file in folder view choose properties and the work group tab,
then select =91Exclude this file when publishing the rest of the web=92 =
press OK.

NOTE: Files used with any FrontPage forms will of course be recreated as
users submit the form, but you can copy the contents for storage
elsewhere and delete them. You should look for plain text files (.txt).
HTML files (.htm) are either part of the website statistics or results
from your forms. Double click to identify the contents and do the same
as for text files.

Orphaned Files

View | Reports | Unlinked files that is, files that can't be reached by
following hyperlinks from your home page. (In other words it does not
appear in the Navigation View).  Orphaned pages may be outdated or
unneeded files that can be deleted to clean up your web. They may also
be pages that should be added to the web's navigation structure in
Navigation view, or linked to by a hyperlink.

In FrontPage 2000 utilizing the Hyperlinks View will give you a better
idea of whether a file is in use or not. =96 See Graphic Orphans below.

TIP: In the Unlinked Files report, you can double-click a file to open
and edit it.

In the Unlinked Files report, to add a task to a file reminding someone
to create a hyperlink to it, right-click the file, and then click Add
Task on the shortcut menu.

In FrontPage 98 the FrontPage 98 Explorer =91All Files=92 view also
features a way to easily arrange and sort "orphans".   Click on
the =92All Files=92 view and wait for the list to appear. Click on the
column heading named =91Orphan=92. This will sort the list to =91Yes=92 =
=91No=92. The =91Yes=92 files are what FrontPage thinks you are NOT =
using in the
web site.

Graphic Orphans:

Hyperlinks view presents a visual "map" of the hyperlinks to and from
any page in your web. On the Views bar, click the Hyperlinks icon to
switch to Hyperlinks view, and then in the Folder List, click the file
you want. (To switch on Folder List go to View | and click the Folder
List icon).

TIP: You can customize Hyperlinks view to show or hide page titles,
links to and from pictures, and so on.

Click once on the file to select the file. Then look at the =
view=92. The file will be the large icon in the middle. Are there any =
arrows coming from the left pointing to the file? If yes, then the file
is being used by another file and should not be deleted quite yet. If
there is no arrow pointing in, then there are no hyperlinks to the file.
Again you can either do a Save As to back them up or just delete them.
The first time I realized I could check my graphics in this way I gained
2mbs, so it is well worth doing.

NOTE: Is the graphic (jpg or gif) a part of a JavaScript? If so do not
delete it as FrontPage does not understand JavaScript in this instance
and cannot detect hyperlinks in JavaScript in your web so you need to
make an informed choice with the help of FrontPage. One hopes that you
don=92t have that many JavaScript graphics that you can=92t remember =

Deleting a File:

Deleting a file in FrontPage works just like in Windows. Select the file
and use the delete key on the keyboard. Or you can right click a file
and select delete from the pop up menu. Don=92t forget before you delete
the file, you may want to make a copy on your computer in case you need
the file later.

Spell check:

There are three ways you can check your spellings.  You can check the
spelling on all pages, on selected pages, or as you go along.

FrontPage checks spelling only for text elements that can be edited in
Page view on the Normal tab. For example, if you add a component such as
a hover button, or if you specify a page title in the page properties,
or write alt tags, spelling in these elements will not be checked.

This is a chore we all wish to escape but it=92s best done as you make
your pages. You can have Microsoft FrontPage automatically check your
spelling as you type. Misspelled words are underlined with a red wavy
line. You can also hide spelling errors (the red wavy lines are not
displayed). For example, hide the spelling errors until you are finished
editing the page, and then display them when you are ready to correct
them.  Go to Tools | Page Options | General tab, select =91Check =
as you type=92 press ok.

If you don't want misspelled words to be underlined, select the Hide
spelling errors in all documents=92 check box. To show spelling errors,
clear this check box.

Checking as you go along really is the best method.  This way you =
have the chore waiting for you and you don=92t forget to do it before
publishing and show your mistakes to the world

Using another two methods when FrontPage finds misspelled words, you can
correct them in two ways:

Add a task for each page on which FrontPage finds misspelled words. You
can correct the spelling at any time by switching to Tasks view and
completing each task.

Correct spelling immediately after FrontPage has finished checking the
spelling. FrontPage displays a list of pages with misspelled words, and
you can then edit each page.

To implement spell check on selected pages or the entire web switch to
=91Folders view=92. Click Tools | Spelling.

Do one of the following:

To check spelling in all pages in the current web, click Entire web. To
check spelling in pages you have selected, click Selected pages.

If you want FrontPage to add a task for each page with misspelled words,
select the Add a task for each page with misspellings box. Click Start.

Hello again.  This month I am going to show you how to build
a PC from scratch.

Selecting components

Before you get started on a do-it-yourself PC, you have to select the
components that you are going to use.  Some of the things you will need
to make choices about are listed below.  If you are planning to use some
of your current hardware in the new PC, that may limit some of your
choices with the other items listed.

 Hard Drive(s)
 Floppy Disk
 Video Card
 Sound Card
 Network Card
 Power Supply
 Operating System

The place to start is with the processor.

All processors have advantages and disadvantages.  The main types of
processors on the market right now are Intel=92s Pentium 4, Pentium III
and Celeron and AMD=92s Athlon, Duron and Athlon XP+.  Personally, I =
AMD=92s Athlon XP+ for its price and performance.

You choice of processor will help decide which motherboard
you can use; manufacturers use differing pin layouts on their CPUs.
There are many websites that can help you choose a motherboard.  Some of
my favorites are Tom=92s Hardware Guide at http://www.tomshardware.com =
AnandTech at http://www.anandtech.com.

Once you have narrowed down which motherboards you are considering, it
is time to look at some of the other components. Hard drives come in 2
major types IDE (EIDE) and SCSI. Since SCSI drives are used primarily in
servers I will focus on IDE drives here.  Currently, IDE drives have a
few differentiating
features: rotational speed (RPM), interface speed (ATA spec), cache size
and storage size.  Here are some basics to help you select a hard drive:

 Go for the fastest rotational speed
 The Highest ATA spec (currently ATA/133)
 The biggest cache size
 The largest storage amount you can afford (I remember
thinking I would never fill a 5 MB hard drive!)

The interface specifications of your hard drive(s) can influence your
motherboard choices.  For example, currently the fastest hard drives
support the ATA/133 specification, but not many motherboards support it.
So if you want one of these drives (and want it to work in ATA/133 mode)
then your motherboard needs to have ATA/133 controllers or you will need
to add a 3rd party IDE controller.

I need to add here that most motherboards have 2 IDE ports
that can support a maximum of 4 IDE or ATAPI devices (2 per cable).  If
you want to use more than 4 Hard Drives, CD Drives or Zip drives then
you will need more than 2 IDE ports.  You can either add a 3rd party IDE
controller or purchase a motherboard that has an IDE RAID controller (it
adds 2 additional IDE ports). RAID stands for Redundant Array of
Inexpensive Disks.  RAID controllers are pretty cool; in their IDE
implementation, they
usually support RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and JBOD.    RAID 0 means that
the disks are striped, meaning that they appear as one big disk to the
Operating System, but are written and read from alternately for speed.
RAID 1 means that two drives are mirrored and the same data appears on
both.  RAID 0+1 means that two drives are striped and then another drive
or drives mirrors the striped array.  JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) means
that multiple drives appear as one huge disk to the operating system.

Now we come to RAM.
Your motherboard choice will determine what kind of RAM you
can use.  For more information on RAM, you can read my article RAM, RAM
I Need More RAM in Volume 2 of ABC.

The next component on our list is the Video Card.

If you are a gamer, you probably already know what video card you want.
A good 3D accelerating Video Card can cost more than a processor.
Currently the fastest Video Cards are available in AGP versions only.
Make sure that you check with places Tom=92s Hardware Guide and =
before you make your Video Card Choice, some motherboards may have a
problems with certain Video Cards.

Now we have most of the rest of the peripherals, things like CD and DVD
ROM drives, CDRW drive, floppy drives, Sound Card, Network Card and
Modem.  Read my article on System Requirements in Volume 5 of ABC to
learn how to match these to your system.

Here are some general guidelines:

 CD/DVD ROM and CDRW drives  - Get the fastest you can.
If you are planning to copy from CD to a CDRW make sure that you have 2
drives (1 CD/DVD ROM and a CDRW) it makes life a lot easier.

 Sound Card =96 Match your sound card to your real needs.  It is very =
to go overboard and purchase features that you will never use.

 Network Card  - Get at least a 10/100 card.  The 10 Mb cards are
roughly the same price.

 Modem =96 Either buy an external modem or make sure that your modem has =
controller.  Controllerless modems (also known as WinModems or soft
modems) use your CPU to process data being sent and received and
therefore are less reliable and slow down your PC.

Last but not least are the case and the power supply.  For all modern
PCs, I recommend a high quality power supply.  If you are building an
Athlon based PC, AMD has a page with power supply recommendations.

For the case, it is possible to get a $30 case that includes a power
supply, but I can=92t recommend them.  The power supply is usually very
low-end and may not provide enough power. Cheap cases also usually have
sharp edges, poor hardware layout and may not provide adequate cooling.
If you=92re building your own PC, you will be much happier (and have =
cuts on your hands!) if you go with a quality case.

For all components I recommend that you go with major manufacturers with
well-known names.  It is a good idea to ask around and see if, in
general, people have had good or bad experiences with the specific items
you=92re interested in.  I would also make sure that items you are
interested in have drivers for, and are supported in, your choice of an
Operating System.

I used 3 PCs in the pictures included in the online version of this
article, one is the test box that I used for the article on Windows XP
in Volume 6 of ABC and the other 2 were being made for customers.  I
would like to thank both Ross Johnson and Martha Bagwell for allowing me
to use their PCs for pictures in this article.

The Components

These are the components I used in these pictures:

 CPU =96 AMD Athlons 1400, XP 1600+ and XP 1800+
 Motherboard - ABIT KG7 and ABIT KG7 RAID
 RAM =96 512 MB RAM in 2 256 MB Kingston or Crucial DDR RAM
 Hard Drive(s) =96 1 or 2 IBM 60 GXP 40 GB Hard Drives  CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
Pioneer 16X DVD ROM  CDRW =96 TDK Velo CD 24/10/40 or Plextor 24/10/40
CDRWs  Floppy Disk =96 Mitsumi 3.5=94 1.4 MB Floppy  Video Card =96 =
MX or GeForce3  Sound Card =96 Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 =
Sound Blaster Audigy X Gamer or Platinum  Network Card =96 3Com 3C 905B
Modem =96 USR PCI Hardware D/F/V v.90 Modem  Case =96 Antec SX1030  =
Supply =96 Enermax ATX 350 Watt  Operating System =96 Windows 98 SE, =
2000, Windows XP Home and Pro

How to do it!

Now that you=92ve chosen the components lets start building!

Caution!!! You need to worry about static electricity.  Use an
antistatic strap or an antistatic mat.  If you accidentally zap one of
your expensive components, you may have to replace it.

Get the Case Ready

You need to look at the mounting holes in the motherboard, mount the
mounting posts in the matching holes in the case.

Now mount the power supply in the case.  Make sure you have
the orientation correct.

Remove the blanks covering the external bays for the Floppy, CD/DVD ROM,
CDRW drives.

With some cases you need to remove the case front to get at
the blanks.

Get the Motherboard Ready

First mount the processor, paying close attention to the orientation of
the processor relative to the motherboards socket, the following picture
shows the clues for an Athlon processor, note the =93flat=94 corners.

To install the processor, lift the locking lever and carefully place the
processor in the socket.  Gently push the processor down and close the
locking lever.  Check your motherboard manual for jumper or dipswitch
settings. You may have to set jumpers that determine the CPU speed and
type and even the voltages used by the processor.  Most of the
motherboards I use are jumperless and these settings are handled by the

Install the processor cooling fan.  Before you install the processor fan
you need to make sure that there is thermal paste between the processor
and heat sink.  Personally I prefer Artic Silver.  All you need is a
thin layer of thermal paste.  If there is a pre-made pad on the heat
sink, you can remove it with alcohol.  Just make sure that you remove
all traces of the pad and that the alcohol is completely dry before you
mount the heat sink and fan.  Be very careful installing the heat sink
and fan, follow the manufacturer=92s instructions.

Now install the memory.  For details see my article on RAM

Installing the Motherboard

Take your time with this step.  Line up the motherboard with the
template on the back of the case and press it into position. If =
want to move into place DON=92T FORCE IT.  Take another look and slowly
put it into position.  Make sure that you don=92t damage the motherboard
by sliding it along the mounting posts.  After it is positioned, attach
it to the case with mounting screws (a high quality case includes all
the hardware you will need).  Gently tighten the screws a little past
finger tight.

Installing the Drives
My preferred cases use drive rails to mount 5 =BC=94 drives like DVD ROM
drives.  Simply attach the rails to the drive.  If it doesn=92t line up
with the front of the case, adjust the position of the rail relative to
the drive.

Before you install the drive you will need to check the jumpers. IDE
drives can be jumpered one of 4 ways: as Master, Slave, Stand Alone or
Cable Select.  Not all drives have the Stand Alone position.  If you use
cable select, your motherboard, drives and cable all must support it.
On non-Cable Select systems, if you are using a single drive on an IDE
channel it must be jumpered as Stand Alone or Master. If you install two
drives, one must be a Master, the other a Slave.  When you=92re ready to
install the 5 =BC=94 drive, you just slide the drive into the case from =

For floppy and hard drives I prefer cases that use removable drive
cages.  Again, if the front of the Floppy drive doesn=92t line up with =
front of the case, simply adjust the drive in its cage or bracket.  For
the hard drive(s), again, it must be jumpered l ike any other IDE

After you have the drives mounted in their cage(s), install
the cage(s) into the case.

Connecting Wires to the Motherboard.

You need to connect the motherboard to the case; most cases have a small
bundle of wires (that are hopefully labeled) that need to connect to
certain pins on the motherboard.  These control the Power Switch, Reset
Switch, Speaker and front panel lights.  Now it is time to use the
motherboard manual to determine where they go.

Inserting the cards
Now install your peripherals cards.  Before you start, check your
motherboard manual for a PCI IRQ map.  Try not to install cards in slots
that share IRQs.  If you must share an IRQ, avoid slots that share an
IRQ with the AGP slot or the IDE controller(s).

Wiring the Case
There are lots of wires inside a computer connecting various items.
There are so many they can have serious impact on cooling performance.
A haphazard cable layout can interfere with proper airflow inside the
computer.  Most cases are designed to have air enter the bottom front
and exit from the top rear.

At this point I connect all the rest of the wires to take a look at how
they can be routed.  Some things to pay attention to:

 Make sure that you connect all the fan wires
 When wiring IDE devices, make sure the Red wire on the IDE cable is at
pin one.  Pin one is usually next to the power connector.  Make sure
that you use 80 wire IDE cable to achieve ATA/66 speed or better.  The
IDE Master should be at the end of the IDE cable, the Slave in the
middle with the blue connecter (for ATA/66+) on the motherboard.  =
forget to run audio cables from the CD/DVD drive and the modem (if using
a voice modem) to the sound card.  Don=92t forget to connect the power
cable for the Power Supply to the motherboard.

When you run the IDE cables, think Origami (yeah, paper
folding) to get them out of the way of the air flow.  Remember that air
should flow from the bottom front of the case to the top rear.

When you=92re done you should see a clean path from the bottom front of
your PC to the top rear.

Let=92s Try it

Connect a Keyboard and Mouse, Monitor and a power cable.
Insert a bootable floppy disk in to drive A:.  Now, you=92re ready to =
the PC.  Turn it on.  Go into the BIOS settings and adjust them to the
requirements of your new PC.  Make sure that you have it set to boot
from the floppy. Save and exit the CMOS Settings and allow your PC to
reboot.  If the floppy drive doesn=92t work, try reversing the drive =
(move the red line to the other side of the drive).  If the PC won=92t
power on, try reversing the orientation of the power switch connection
from the case.  The same trick also can help if the LEDs on the front of
the case aren=92t working.

If everything is working, close up the case and admire your
new PC. You can now make it useful by installing an Operating System.

Well, I have to be totally honest with you.  With the holiday season
approaching and several REAL-LIFE responsibilities, I have
procrastinated in the development of this article.  Trying to fill in
for Jack is not an easy task.  As you all know, his articles and his
NEAT NET TRICKS site are chock full of quality, hard-hitting bits of
information.  How in the world can I fill in for this man?

Each month that I write this article, I will be attempting to take on a
different facet of the Net.  Some may be technical. Some may be
philosophical.  Some may be downright idiotic. In truth, however, the
Internet is all three of these things. I hope that my ranting will keep
you entertained or, perhaps enlightened as we all trudge forward into
the abyss that is=85 The Internet.

MONTH 1 =96
An Introduction

In the 1970s,  Atari, Odyssey and Intelivision burst onto the scene. In
the 1980s, names like Donkey Kong, Nintendo, and Sim City entered our
vocabulary.  In the 90s, Playstation, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal
Kombat premiered.

Every year, we are seeing more and more steps in the evolution of our
video games.  One of the most dramatic changes in the past 5 years has
been the move from the SINGLE- and DOUBLE-player standalone games to
INTERNET play, which can range anywhere from 2 to 2,000 players or more.

Why Evolve?

It is interesting to think about why this shift was so significant to
the world=92s video gamers.  It is very simple, though.  If you can
remember back to the 1980s, when video games were really taking off,
magazines started coming out with THE MAPS.  You know what I am talking
about.  These were the pages that showed exactly how to maneuver
yourself through Donkey Kong=92s home without getting killed, how to =
the princess in Dragon=92s Lair without getting singed, and how to =
all 715 levels of Ms. Pacman without breaking a sweat.

Although they were the most awesome games of their day, video games were
static.  Mastering their domain was as simple as l earning the basic
maneuvers, learning the specific maps or using
**GASP** the cheat codes.  As you can guess or remember,
there was only so much fun and excitement that you could get from a
static video game.

Introducing two-player games allowed you to go head-to-head with your
friends (or enemies) in a totally dynamic challenge.
>From TANK BATTLE to JOUST to ASTEROIDS, the games
now included a new level of fun.  Kids could have bragging rights at
school about beating their friends, rather than the previous brags about
merely holding the high score on the game.

Whether you are talking about arcade games or the home video games, the
two-player era could only go so far as well.  Your friends would need to
come over to your house or meet you at the arcade to play, so a
challenger was not a guarantee.

A New World =93Wide=94 Order

With the increase of home access to the Internet, game companies soon
found an emerging market for their games. Initially, ISPs such as
America Online started offering multi-player online games for their
subscribers.  Now, you can find people online to play games virtually 24
hours a day. Below, I will highlight a couple of the current game styles
that are available on the Net and will include links in case you want to
check some of them out.

Sometimes, you need to get back to the basics=85

Some of the most basic multi-player games are only as far away as your
web browser.  Specifically, I have been impressed by the game site over
at YAHOO.  ( http://games.yahoo.com/ ) Not only are there dozens of
different varieties of games to choose (from card games to board games
to trivia games), there are thousands of game rooms to join.  I have
played at this site from time to time and was really impressed by the
way that they handled their EUCHRE game.  Many of the nuances of the
game were built in and the look and feel, coupled with the chat
function, makes it seem like the real thing.  I can only assume that
they have given the same level of detail to the other games as well.
Check the site out to see if any of your favorites are there.  :-)

Playing in the MUD

Multi-User Dimensions (or MUDs) were one of the first multiplayer games
on the net.  These text-based games could best be described as online
RPGs (similar to Dungeons and Dragons).  You create characters, help
them to grow more powerful and gain wealth.  From the original games,
several variations sprung forth.  MUSHes and MURPEs were more roleplay
oriented than the traditional HACK & SLASH games. There are literally
thousands of these games online now and most are FREE to play.  The
games vary in terms of quality, difficulty and genre (from Medieval
Fantasy to Futuristic to movie-themed).  Though it may be difficult to
see a text-based game as being fun, it is actually quite involving as
you meet players and characters from all over the world and you all play
a game together in real time.

To check out these types of games, I suggest that you look at the MUD

information, message boards, a directory of games to play and just about
anything that you need to know about MUDs and their relatives.

Looking ahead into the Future

Game makers are keeping the Internet at the forefront in their game
development.  New Internet-ready games are coming out every month.  The
advent of these games has created a new reason for online communities,
competition ladders & clans.  In the =91First Person Shooter=92 world,
several games are helping players waste their time online.  Unreal
Tournament (my personal favorite) and Quake Arena are two such games
that have gained an awesome following.  Roleplaying Games, such as
Baldur=92s Gate, Everquest and Diablo are helping to expand the playing
arena to include thousands of players at a time.

Where we will be going in the future is unclear.  What is nearly
certain, though, is that more people are getting online worldwide every
day.  As bandwidth issues become less and less of a problem, game
developers will be able to bring us more and more to do online.  When
you consider the possibilities of virtual reality and using voice
communications in real time, who knows?

What I do know is this:   It=92s a great time to be an online gamer.

This has become a faq for me - "I received an email I can't open! It
ends with .email. How can I view it??"

Easily - you can open any email that arrives with a different extension
than the default .eml. All you have to do is give the odd extension the
same association as .eml has.

Though it involves editing the registry, it is not difficult or
dangerous since you are not changing any existing values. However,
unless you are familiar and comfortable working with the registry, I
advise that you always back it up before doing any reg editing. For the
easiest way to backup and restore your Win9x registry, see my "Easiest
Way To Manually Backup and Restore the Windows 95\98\98se Registry"
or my article in Volume 5 of ABC.

Once you have your registry backed up, proceed.

I'll use the extension .email in this example. This seems to be a common

Launch regedit and go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and expand it by clicking the plus sign
next to it.
Scroll down to find select.eml and select it (the entries are arranged
alphabetically) Click Registry>Export Registry File Export and save the
file to your desktop as a Registration file (.reg) Give it any name you
want. Exit the registry and go to your desktop. Right click your
exported reg file and choose Edit. Replace .eml with .email Save the
change and close the file. Now double click it to merge the change to
your registry. And that's it.
>From now on, all emails arriving with a .email extension will open
with the same application used to open your regular .eml emails.

Method 2

Right click the Root key and choose New - Key.
Name the new key .email  (don't forget the dot .)
Click View-Refresh to put your new key in alphabetical order. Then in
the right hand pane for your new .email key, double click Default and
enter Microsoft Internet Mail Message. Finally, right click an empty
area in the right hand pane and choose New - String Value and name it
Content Type. Double click it and enter message/rfc822 as the value.

Any emails you now get with a .email extension will open as regular .eml
messages do.

Note - in the event the second method doesn't work, the cause can only
be an incorrect entry. To check, you would just go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.eml  and make sure the values in the right hand pane
are identical to the ones you entered for .email.

As a general rule of thumb, when students are writing their term papers
there are more viruses out than normal. I=92m not saying that students
place viruses on computers deliberately, as this could ruin there term
paper, as well as their parents computer or their own.

The places you normally pick up these viruses are:

 1. School or public libraries that allow members to use their computers

 2. Schools' computer rooms

 3. Places you can rent computers by the hour to do work or just print a

One of the most common viruses that hits Montreal when
students write their term papers is the WAZZU virus.  This virus is
really not very destructive, but does cause problems. What it does is
write its name WAZZU at random in the middle of your document.  This
virus is easily removed by any anti-virus program.

Here is a list of ways to avoid getting this virus:

1. If you're going somewhere just to print a document, write-protect
your floppy disk.

2. Before opening any documents on your home computer, scan them with
your AV program.

3. If you have to go to any of these types of places, before going,
backup your documents on another floppy disk in case you get a virus
like this, so you won=92t have to search and delete the word WAZZU in
thousands of places.

In different cities it may be a different virus as well.  One year in
Montreal, the WAZZU got so far out of control the local phone company
got it on their server and all hell broke loose.

Message Rules

Last month, we discussed how to set up new folders to help organize all
of your incoming email.

This month, we're gonna take this idea further by setting up some
Message Rules that will examine each incoming email and direct it to
specific folders.

The first step is to decide which messages you'd like to send directly
to the folders you created. If you took my advice and set up one for
each of your friends, they will probably be near the top of your list.
Here's how to set them up.

In OE, go to Tools, click on Message Rules and then on Mail. When the
Message Rules window opens, click on the New button on the right side.

In the top section (Select the conditions for your rule), place a check
mark next to the "Where the To line contains people" line.

In the second section (Select the actions for your rule), click on the
"Move it to the specified folder" line.

In the third section, click directly on the blue words "contains
people". Another window will open. Type in your friend's email address
and triple check it for accuracy.

Click on the Add button and then on the OK button to set this part of
the rule (I find it much easier to just press the Enter key twice).

Next, click directly on the blue word "Specified". Another window will
open asking you to select the folder that will accept these messages as
they are downloaded into OE.

Locate and click on the one with your friend's name and click on the OK
button to set this part of the rule.

In the last section, give the rule a descriptive name (in this case,
just call it Jack if that's your friend's name).

Click the OK button at the bottom to set this rule in stone and repeat
the process for the rest of your friends.

When you're finished adding friends, you may wish to add any newsletters
or email groups to which you belong. Go through the same steps, but
place the top check mark next to something that is always the same for
messages from that list. In the case of this newsletter, every message
has [ABComputers] somewhere in the subject line. In that case, place a
check next to the "Where the Subject Line contains certain words"
instead of the "Where the To line contains people" line we used in the
friends example above. When you're ready to fill it in, use
"[ABComputers]" (without the quotes) as the text it should recognize. Of
course, you'll have to replace that "[ABComputers]" part with whatever
makes sense for each newsletter or email group to which you belong.

When you've finished adding all of the rules you want, you'll find that
most of your incoming messages will not go to your Inbox. Instead, it'll
be much easier to follow conversations with friends, fellow list members
and newsletters from within their own folders. Keep in mind that Message
Rules are an ongoing process. You'll find yourself adding new rules as
your subscription preferences change.

Also, when you leave an email group or unsubscribe from a newsletter,
there's no longer a reason to keep its rule. There's a Delete button in
there to allow you to easily remove an unnecessary rule.

Also, new to Google, type in a phone number and get hits on anywhere
that the phone number was listed. Try your own and see what it says : )
