The George Mason University Department of Global and Community Health
within the College of Health and Human Services is launching an open-rank
search for a faculty member in social and behavioral sciences who is
committed to academic excellence and to conducting original and
collaborative research in public health.
Though all research areas will be considered, preference will be given to
applicants with expertise in prevention science, implementation science,
and/or community-based participatory research, with a focus on health
equity. Midcareer and senior candidates are expected to have an active or
recent history of externally-funded research, an established publication
record, and evidence of effective classroom teaching commensurate for a
tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Early
career candidates will demonstrate strong evidence of potential as an
independent researcher to obtain external funding and show promise of
effective classroom teaching.
This is a state-funded, full-time (9-month) tenure-track/tenured faculty
position with additional summer research and teaching opportunities.
Appointments will begin in August 2022. As the nation’s youngest R1
research university, George Mason University has a strong institutional

*Responsibilities:*
Successful candidates will be expected to: 1) develop or continue a program
of original research; 2) engage in collaborative research; 3) teach and
mentor students; 4) establish or sustain an extramurally funded research
program; and 5) engage in professional service in support of advancing the
College’s mission. To the extent possible, faculty will be expected to
contribute synergistically to development of courses, degree programs and
research.
*Required Qualifications:*
An earned doctoral degree in a public health, behavioral, or social science
discipline or closely-related field by the fall of 2022; public
health-related research experience; record of refereed publications; active
or recent history of extramurally funded research for midcareer and senior
candidates; strong oral and written communication skills; and experience
teaching and/or mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate
levels.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
Candidates for associate or full professorships ideally will have
experience with nontraditional adult learning, online teaching and evidence
of mentoring doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows for academic
appointments. Candidates for assistant professorships ideally will have
postdoctoral fellowship training with an established trajectory of refereed
publications and evidence of research funding (extramurally funded grants
or awards). Preference will be given to candidates that can teach a wide
range of courses for MPH and doctoral public health students.
*About the Department of Global and Community Health:*
The Department of Global and Community Health has 20 full-time research
faculty and an active research portfolio of approximately $2 million that
focuses on public health research and teaching. Extramural research support
comes from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation,
the National Institute for Justice, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Faculty expertise is
multidisciplinary with members in epidemiology, biostatistics, and the
social and behavioral sciences.
The Department prepares students for careers in public health just minutes
from the nation’s capital. We offer accredited and nationally ranked
undergraduate and graduate degrees that provide students with the
knowledge, skills, and experience to solve existing and emerging public
health challenges. A PhD in Public Health with concentrations in
epidemiology and social/behavioral sciences enrolled its first cohort of

*About the College of Health and Human Services:*
The College of Health and Human Services is located in the new Peterson
Family Health Science Hall, which has 165,000 square feet of offices,
conference rooms, classrooms, and wet and dry labs. The College has
accredited degree programs in Global and Community Health, Health
Administration and Policy, Nutrition and Food Studies, Nursing, and Social
Work, including CEPH accredited bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.
The ASTHO-Mason Collaborative for Applied Public Health Practice is a
groundbreaking initiative to prepare the next generation of research and
practice leaders in public health. The College’s research infrastructure
includes DSHI (Discovery Science and Health Informatics Center with a
Machine Learning Lab), imaging resources (DEXA, fMRI, movement capture), as
well as physical and metabolic human assessment tools. The College operates
a Population Health Center that supports primary and behavioral health
care, research, and training. The College has an active research portfolio
of approximately $9 million and is transitioning to become the first CEPH
