Actually, we have just one cd that has a fingerprint and skips in
playback, and cleaning it with a lens cloth and lens spray should
correct this. Whereas I've had quite a few failures of A: drive
diskettes with consequent loss of all data on them.

The reason I asked what is an optical disk, is that I once saw
what appeared to be a glorified A: drive type diskette with some
kind of optical feature to it. This seems out of style now but it
made me wonder whether it might be what was talked about.

Now I think of it, I seem to recall mention of 'optical CDs'
versus 'CDs' when looking into purchasing a rewritable drive. I
went for an ordinary CD burner so it would be compatible with our
other cd drives.

Seems like there isn't much of anything that won't be damaged by
leaving it out in the sun, except cats and certain house plants...:)
