     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also

- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
          - With almost everyone on vacation this week, there's not much to
report since the last memo, but, in the main program, Jerry Butler of PBS and
Mark Aitken of Sinclair are joining the broadcasters panel (which now covers
ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Pax, PBS, Sinclair, UPN, and the WB).
     PBS has been in HD news recently for the PBS/Sony High-Definition
Production Pilot:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dailynews/one.php?id=3572>
     As for Sinclair, they just made a deal with Verizon for analog and digital
retransmission on the telco's FiOS TV system:
<http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=9101>
     You can also learn more about telco TV at the Telco TV session, with Brad
Medford of SBC/AT&T Labs. I can't reveal too much yet, but you can also expect
something in the main program on the relationship of film grain and compressed
data rate.
          - Tony Cole, vp of engineering, and Josh Derby of Discovery will be
moderating a roundtable on international deliverables and Dolby audio.
          - There have been more than 30 requests for demo space. Here are 22
that are fully confirmed: Adobe, ARRI, Blu-Laser Cinema, Codex Digital,
Computer Modules/DVEO, Gary Demos, Edifis, Evertz, For-A, Iridas, Iowa
Interactive, Lanterna Magica, Lightworks, Linear Acoustic, MPro/Omnitek, MTI
Film, Neural Audio, Panasonic, Quantel, Ross Video, Silicon Optix/Teranex, and
SmartJog.  Expect more to come!
          - The early registration discount expires at the end of 2005, so

     Don't say you weren't warned!

     - Next generation disks -
          - Could MPEG-2 be better than H.264? Digigami says it is -- at least
for the specific case of next-generation disks, where a relatively high peak
data rate is available:
<http://tinyurl.com/dx3yz>
          - Here are a couple of opinion pieces of interest. The first
suggests that other technologies are advancing so fast that it might already be
too late for those disks:
<ttp://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/26/technology/26format.html>
     The other, from EE Times, suggests that Microsoft holds the key:
<http://tinyurl.com/bk4ez>
          - Microsoft regularly attends ***The Technology Retreat***. The new
TiVo developments, like "push" programming, were revealed by TiVo's chief
technology officer at a ***Technology Retreat*** years ago. As for
next-generations disks, the 2006 ***Technology Retreat*** will literally have
the guys who wrote the book ("DVD Demystified"), and, in case you'd prefer a
different viewpoint, you can ask about MPEG-2 vs. H.264 at the compression
panel, moderated by a SMPTE vp. BE THERE!

     - Off-air U.S. viewers - A recent Associated Press study reportedly shows
these interesting tidbits:
          - 46% of cable boxes are digital and 52% analog [maybe the other 2%
are hybrid]. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) put
total cable households at 73.2 million in February and digital at 26.3 million
in June, but many of those total households might not use any boxes, so the new
numbers are certainly possible:
<http://www.ncta.com/Docs/PageContent.cfm?pageID=86>
          - 51% of those surveyed had cable, which is a lot lower than NCTA's
66.8% in February. 26% had satellite, which seems pretty close to other
estimates, but 22% used off-air reception, which is higher than other estimates:
<http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/60370.htm>
     Of course, as always, you can expect to get the latest figures on
household penetration from not only NCTA but also the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC), the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), and others at

     - HD local channels via satellite - DirecTV has added New York to the list
of markets where they're offering HD via H.264 coding, but the press release
lists only the four major commercial networks, which is less than the HD
currently offered over-the-air in the market:
<http://tinyurl.com/9x3ym>
     You can ask DirecTV's Bob Plummer all about it at ***The Technology
Retreat***.  BE THERE!

     - July 1 -
          - This week I've listed 129 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
94 (including questionable listings) (73%) have integrated DTT-reception
capability. As of July 1, 100% of those manufactured in or imported to the
U.S. and equipped with tuners were supposed to have integrated DTT-reception
capability. I've also listed 61 ads for TVs between 25- and 35-inch. Of
those, 16 (again, including questionable listings) (26%) have integrated
DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or
imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that

          - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - None of the lists I check were updated this week.

- The December issue of ATSC's The Standard is now available. The cover story
is about the digital newsgathering that will be the subject of the ATSC/SBE
seminar at ***The Technology Retreat***:
<http://www.atsc.org/news_information/newsletter/english/Dec_05.pdf>

- Warren Communications News offered this interesting tidbit today: "Spanish
low power TV may overtake full power rivals". It should be on their site until
tomorrow morning:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>

- International H/DTV news:

     - DTT will not be available to some viewers in Scotland until analog
shutdown gets under way:
<http://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/output/2005/12/28/story7878977t0.shtm>

     - HDTV is beginning in Shanghai on Sunday, but it's still not clear to me
that this is DTT-based. This story is from Shanghai Daily:
<http://tinyurl.com/b7chk>

- All the effort you put into 24p to give your program a film look may
disappear on consumer TVs. Micronas will be demonstrating Real Motion at next
week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The system uses motion
compensation to create missing frames:
<http://www.digitimes.com/displays/a20051229PR201.html>

- CEA has not yet released sales figures past week 48.
- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Best
Buy and Circuit City.

- Ad confusions: Computers & Electronics Warehouse called the Panasonic
TC20LA5 16:9 (it's 4:3).  Again, J&R called the Canon LV-5220 800 x 600 4:3
projector "HDTV Supported."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo. The
large price difference for the InFocus 61 md10 at J&R in two different papers
is probably a result of the ads coming out on different days; prices are in
flux this season.

- DVD news:

     - Again, CEA has not yet released figures past week 48.

     - Here's the dialogue from the Metro Cartoon: It's All About You by Tony
Murphy in today's Metro New York:
     Woman: Are you going to send your aunt a thank-you letter for the gift
she sent you?
     Man (holding a small electronic device of some sort): Yeah... as soon as
I figure out what it is... At first I thought it was a cell phone... Then I
thought it was a TV remote... It's a little too big to be a pager...
     Woman:  Maybe it's an iPod
     Man: Nah... too many buttons... I'm pretty sure it's not a garage-door
opener...
     Woman:  Does it play DVD's?
     Man:  Of course
