How do I get started?

This is a complex topic and it depends on what level of user you are. We recommend that list owners have some experience in running lists before taking on the job, but we've also supported a lot of “newbies.” Here's a general guideline:

  1. Does your topic fit with FreeLists' requirements?
  2. Make sure you know what it is you're trying to accomplish. Is a mailing list even what you're looking for?
  3. Define your audience and the things you wish to discuss with them or have them discuss together. What's the appropriate list style? Newsletter or discussion? Who should be allowed to subscribe?
  4. Very often, list owners are requesting a list because they have a group of people in mind. They know these people currently lack the proper means of communication and know that a mailing list would solve this need.
  5. If you're migrating your list from another mailing list host, be SURE everyone on your list knows what's going on so no one's surprised. We can't stress enough how bad it is for users to suddenly receive mail from “some new service” that they'll now consider “spam.”
  6. Use the Sign Up form to request a list after carefully reading the User Agreement.
  7. Read the documentation in the Help section!

Basically, be sure you know what you're getting yourself into and that your future subscribers know your intentions.
