Time was spent discussing the significance and realization of this theme. > > It was generally agreed that the observance of Shabbat was the nexus of the most significant issues currently facing the Havurah: The Torah, Education, and Jewish Identity. > > Toni put it very succinctly when she said that for the Havurah Shabbat was a "regular, systematic, binding force." > > 2) Education: > > Jay discussed an interesting evolution of the ongoing monthly study group. The 5 currently active members were looking to re-focus the group by looking for a theme and a text that would dovetail with other Havurah activities surrounding Shabbat and the Torah. An invitation would also be made to any other Havurah members who wished to join. > > Toni had another succinct comment in which she said that she was most interested in "what does the torah teach us about how to live now." > > There was a general interest in learning more about the Shabbat service. The 2 major areas of interest were the order and reason of the service and the choreography of the service. > > 3) Shabbat Services > > It was agreed that there is now support for 2 services each month. It was proposed that we try to have one with a Rabbi and one lay-lead. The 2nd and 4th Saturdays were chosen so that the timing of the services would follow a regular pattern. > > It was decided that we would have a lay-lead service next Saturday Jan 10th. Randi and Mori will lead the service. There will be a potluck kiddish following. > > 4) Torah > > It was decided that the next step for the torah was to more accurately determine its condition and estimate the costs for repair and for building an ark. Jay agreed to coordinate having the torah evaluated. Steve agreed to investigate the cost of building an ark in Rockford. > > 5) Officers: > > Toni agreed to be treasurer. Abi and Steve agreed to be co-chairs of the steering committee. > > 6) Next Meeting > > The next meeting will be at Nance's house on January 18th at 4:00 PM. > > Steering committee meetings are open to any Havurah members who wish to attend. > > Stephen Green > > > > > > > > >
