While the file is still in eXPanded view, you can run a routine, such as the following frame ADDSS, to enable switching to formatted views. For each orphaned US command in the file, ADDSS adds a dummy (empty) SS command at top of file. I'm assuming that this will be sufficient to stop NB from crashing when you switch to a formatted view.
