(reply to CJ) Thanks for putting up those quotes. I always like it when that happens. But could I ask one favor? For the benefit of the message board (which this goes to), could we have the source of the quotes, and could we perhaps avoid the bold and underlining and all of that? It makes it a little hard to read. We can get the important points ourselves. Why not just retain whatever convention Ludwig has for emphasis in the original? In fact, because some email clients cannot process all of the dressing, why not just use allcaps for what Wittgenstein has for italics? Something like this: “people nowadays think that scientists exist to instruct them, poets, musicians, etc, to give them pleasure. The idea THAT THESE HAVE SOMETHING TO TEACH THEM – that does not occur to them. [all caps substituted for italics – sw] CV, 1939-1940, p.36 Once again, thanks for that contribution.
