[here is a sample welcome message that I have written for new subscribers.
Comments always welcome]

Hello!

Welcome to Wittrs.  You are receiving this email either because you subscribed
to Wittrs yourself, or because you posted a message to our discussion board.
This email provides important information about how to use the group. Please
save it for future reference.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF
If you are new to Wittrs, we ask that you send an email to the group,
introducing yourself. This is purely voluntary, but we would very much like you
to do it. Please tell us who you are, what your occupation is, how you learned
of the group, and what you think of Wittgenstein.

WITTRS ON THE WEB
There are two ways to read and contribute to Wittrs – by email or on the
web. If you choose to read the group on the web, you have the following choices:
    1. WEB VIEW:  --  http://tinyurl.com/ku7ga4 ;
    2. THE BOARD -- http://alturl.com/whcf
    3. GOOGLE:  -- http://groups.google.com/group/Wittrs
    4. YAHOO:   -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Wittrs/
    5. FREELIST:  --  //www.freelists.org/archive/wittrs/09-2009

(Each of these services requires registration. It's no big deal. You create a
login and a password. You must be logged in to post. Only one of the services,
#2, is a message board. It had more posting options for you. The others are
simply web-archives provided by Opensubscriber, Google, etc.)

WITTRS BY EMAIL
Your email subscription is at Freelists.org. You are not able to post to the
email group unless you are signed up there. There are two ways to become
subscribed. Either you followed our advertisement and did it yourself. Or
you logged into our Message Board and posted something. If it is the latter,
you were subscribed by default. Default subscriptions don't receive emails
(other than this one). lf you want to start receiving emails of each post, or
if you want to change any aspect of your subscription, simply do one of the
following: (a) go to Freelists and change your subscription settings
yourself (//www.freelists.org/list/wittrs); or (b) send mail to the group
owner, asking for a change (whoooo26505@xxxxxxxxx). Also, note the following
options:

A. Digests. If you want to receive only one mail per day showing all of the
posts made, you will want to select the digest option when managing your
subscription. HOWEVER, you may want to use Yahoo's digest, because it looks
much more nifty. (You could also use Google's). To do this, however, requires
that you subcribe to the yahoo or google versions of our group. That can be a
pain. So I suggest just asking the owner to set that up for you. It's very
easy. Send mail to whoooo26505@xxxxxxxxx asking to receive a better digest.

B. Stopping mail. To stop receiving mail, your Freelists account needs to be
set to "vacation." That keeps you as a member and entitles you to post. If you
need help doing this, send mail to the list owner, whoooo26505@xxxxxxxxxx He
will adjust your settings if you like.

SEARCHING WITTRS
Information on searching Wittrs can be found at our archive
page: http://seanwilson.org/wittgenstein.discussion.html.

POSTING POLICY
Wittrs has a posting policy. If you violate it, you will be encouraged not to
continue to do so. Frequent violators become moderated. But no one is ever
banned. Moderated messages post pretty quickly. People are removed from
moderation when they no longer pose a risk of violating rules. The rules are
pretty simple, conceptually: talk only about ideas, not the people offering
them. To see a more detailed explaination, go
here: http://ludwig.squarespace.com/dbhelp/ ;

TRASH QUOTING
When replying to a message, please trim the other person's message that is not
needed for your reply. Be especially cognizant not to leave huge segments of
another person's mail below yours. In short, make sure you remove your
trash. For more information, see here: xx

QUALITY OF THE PARTICIPANTS
Wittrs has a wide variety of participants. Some are scholars in the academy.
Some have even authored literary works. But many are just students or people
interested in intellectual ideas. As a result, the quality of the messages will
vary. We suggest you get a feel for who you might want to discuss with. Not
every post needs replied to (let alone read). Wittrs is committed to the idea
that anyone should be able to post no matter their education or title. Think of
Wittrs as a store: although many items (messages) may be offered for your
consideration, you need only concern yourself with the one(s) good enough to
capture your fancy.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
The only people who are allowed to participate in Wittrs are those who: (a) are
inspired by, knowledgeable of, or curious about Wittgenstein; and (b) see
Wittgenstein as a polar star in the intellectual universe. Part (b) simply
means that one finds Wittgenstien's ideas to be important and substantial to
intellectual culture, even if they happen to disagree with them or see his
thoughts as mistaken. So the only way you are permitted to be here is if you
fit (a) and (b). (Please note that we make exceptions for people who are just
curious about Wittgenstein. Such persons obviously could not meet (b)'s
requirements). The only people who we exclude from membership, therefore, are
people who dislike Wittgenstein personally or believe his ideas foolish and
irrelevant, or who don't know anything about his ideas and are content staying
that way. That's why we are called "Wittrs." We formed ourselves as a group
because we believed
that Wittgenstein-learned and appreciative people make a more insightful
discussion environment (when talking about anything at all).
