[wisb] swallows still at S Metro

Hi all:
On my way back to Deerfield, I spent a little over an hr at S Metro looking at
the swallows from about 0945 to 1100.. The cold and especially the wind made
viewing difficult (actually the viewing was easy, it was that danged
identifying part that was difficult). I saw the 3 swallows almost immediately.
At least initially, they spent most of their time near the NE-most building,
swooping in and out of the southernmost channel by this building. I got
identifiable but not satisfying looks at the cave swallow. The tree swallows
occasionally got well into the air where they would stall out into the wind
before reversing directions, so I got good looks at them. But, so far as I
could tell, the cave always stayed low and was never in view for more than a
couple of seconds at a time. At the eastern end of the aforementioned channel,
there is a pipe a few feet above the water line that has a lot of whitewash
below it. Obviously some birds roost there...perhaps the swallows? Based on
the area being to the east of where you can stand, I'd think the afternoon
would be the best time to view these birds. Certainly not on a morning like
this when the lighting was crappy and the wind was about 200 mph.
