I spent the last week in Shell Lake Wisconsin at my in-laws house on vacation.
I had many opportunities to do some birding while there. Naturally everyday I
was able to bird a little as my in-laws live right on the lake. We saw Bald
Eagles every day as well as lots of Loons and Osprey. I was able to pick up 40
species just in the yard. It was quite nice. One day I spent with a friend
that I met on the Wisconsin bird site, Joey Richoff. We have now been birding
three years together and we look forward to the twice a year that I able to
bird with him. I picked up 4 life birds with him this year. We just hit some
hot spots around the area that he had seen birds I was looking for. Then the
family and I went to the southern part of the state so they could go to the
Wisconsin Dells to a water park and I went birding. I started off at Baxter
Hollow. It yielded by best looks at the Pileated Woodpeckers yet. No pictures
but lots of good long looks in a heavily wooded area. I was able pick up
another life bird there for me, American Woodcock. I then went to the Devil's
lake area and birded. I hit a couple of campgrounds and got some good looks at
Hooded Warblers and YS flickers and a Great Blue Hereon Rookery. I then went
to the International Crane Foundation. I walked around and checked out the
cranes and then did a couple of the nature trails they have there. I picked up
a life bird there, an Orchard Oriole. Very nice looks but not good pictures.A
couple days later I followed a tip I saw on e-bird for sightings of Canada and
Mourning Warblers up in the Danbury area. I found lots of great birding up
there. I was treated to see two life birds for me up there. I found the
Mourning Warbler and a Broad Winged Hawk. I also photographed but didn't know
until Joey notified me that one of the Golden winged Warblers that I
photographed was actually a Brewster's Warbler. All in all it was a great trip
with 8 new life birds for me and some great photos and great birding. Here is
a link to the photos that I took while there. Eric PetersonAmerican Fork, UT
