Hello,
I was wondering if someone might be able to help me identify a bird
call. It' a single note and it sounds like a mallard "kwak" if you
will. It's fairly loud when it's close by - you won't miss it, that's
for sure. It's been loud enough to actually wake me up every now and
then. The call occurs every 15 seconds or so and as I said, it's just
a single note. It starts about 9pm or so and will go through 2am.
the habitat that I am hearing it in is in Fox Point, southeast,
Wisconsin (10 miles north of Milwaukee). The area is suburban, quite
wooded and basically adjacent to the Schlitz Audubon Center with Lake
Michigan a block or so away. There isn't any standing water (ponds,
marshy areas) nearby that i am aware of. I have been hearing this
call now for about 2 weeks or so and most recently this evening about
9pm. It sounded like it was probably 20- 30 feet away, which would
have put it in some woods with houses all around, no water, maybe
shrubs.
The call is similar to, but not a Woodcock or a Common Nighthawk. It
sounds more like a mallard "kwak" than either of those do. Sorry for
the fairly non-scientific description. Any help would be greatly
appreciated as I have been trying to figure this out for a couple
weeks now!
