Hi all, after considering that the towhee I found at Bender Park last week
might actually be a spotted towhee, I submited it to ebird. Official word is
that it is a spotted x eastern towhee hybrid. Still quite an exciting find for
me. If I had thought it was something unusual when I found it on Sept. 25 I
would have posted it in a more timely manner. I'll bet it is no longer there,
but if you are interested in looking, it was at the end of Ryan Road, right
before the turn into Bender Park in Oak Creek.

Subject: Question about your Spotted Towhee observation in eBird

Dear Rita Flores Wiskowski,
I am one of the volunteer regional reviewers for eBird and am writing to you
about your observation of 1 Spotted Towhee on Sep 25, 2011 from "Bender Park",
Milwaukee, US-WI.
Chris Wood, one of the head eBird guys emailed me and said he thought this bird
was actually a hybrid Eastern Towhee x Spotted Towhee. A pure bird should have
more extensive white on scapulars, less white at base of primaries.
I didn't even notice it was a hybrid initially, but looking at google images at
a variety of towhees, I think he is right.
You can actually report the hybrid in ebird by going to "my observations",
editing this checklist, deleting the spotted towhee, and then clicking the plus
sign next to "add species" and start typing "spotted x e" in the box and the
hybrid should come up.
Neat looking bird, and good photo.
Thanks for eBirding,
Nick
