I am used to the chickadees waiting patiently for the feeder to be filled (and even scolding me sometimes when it's really empty and I'm not fast enough, but a young and seemingly healthy goldfinch must have been especially hungry this morning. He sat in the tray of my basket feeder chowing down on oil sunflower while I filled the safflower feeder, the niger bag, two peanut feeders and a water tray. Didn't flinch once even when I was within inches of him. Finally, it was time to fill the sunflower feeder. He hung on even as I grabbed it to bring it down, but flitted off as I opened the lid and landed on my head, where he perched on my hat until I hung the basket back up. Whereupon he flew back to the basket tray and resumed eating with a satisfied little chirp.
