I am so pleased to be added to the list of folks who were successful in
locating the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in Kewaunee Cty - Claire Romanak
and I set out this morning on our flycatcher quest - along the way on
Luxemberg Rd we stopped for a good sized flock of Snow Buntings, Horned
Larks, and Lapland Longspurs - while coming into the general area of the
reported flycatcher, we were having some directional difficulties and
came across Dave Freriks who directed us to the location after saying:
"I've been here for an hour and a half and haven't seen it" - our hearts
sank a bit, but we persevered, only to be re-contacted a short time
later by Dave, and he had found the bird! Dave is now my hero!! He
took us to the bird which VERY obligingly permitted us to observe it for
a full 45 mins until it tired of its grasshopper diet and flew up into
the cow pasture - Claire and Dave both took wonderful photos of this
very beautiful bird! As per his post, the bird was on E south of O by
.5 mile -
Claire and I drove over to Kewaunee harbor, walked out to the
lighthouse, and were able, from there and with a scope, to identify a
group of Surf, Black and White-winged Scoters - also still present was
the Glaucous Gull, quite near shore to the south of the lighthouse - we
did not locate any loons -
We also drove up to Algoma harbor and located a Cackling Goose feeding
on the shore some distance away from the Canadas -
as we headed home south on E from the turn out of Kewaunee, we were sent
off by a flock of seven Tundras overhead - magnificent birds at any time
of the year -
good luck birding!
