Paul Hunter and I ran up to Crex Meadows this past weekend, and tallied 94 birds for the trip. We stopped on the way in Black River Falls and heard a loud and very clear serenade by the CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW. At Crex we heard SHARP-TAILED GROUSE twice, but couldn't get a look at them. Brisk winds and a loud chorus of frogs foiled out attempts to find (hear) Yellow Rail, LeConte's Sparrow, or Nelson's Sparrow, unfortunately. We also visited other spots in the vicinity. Crex is an incredibly beautiful place, and we recommend it to anyone who can find the time to make the trip.
