Took a short ride around the Prairie du Chien area this afternoon. Not the best time for bird activity but I found a lot of fun bird watching activity. At La Riviere Park on the southeast side of town the titmice were busy at the feeders on the east side of the maintenance building. The Carolina Wren was near the ditch crossing on the White-tail Trail while the E. Towhee is present behind the rental house. He also comes to the feeders but not today. Song sparrows were found in the city brush pile near the compost site (you have to walk in) but the white-throated sparrow found during the CBC was not found. Mallards, black ducks, and a trumpeter swan were found in St. Feriole Slough between the Blackhawk Ave bridge and the Washington St. bridge. The Villa Louis pond has a lot of mallards as usual for this time of year. EC Doves were found at several locations in town, including near St. Peter's Lutheran Church off US 18 westbound but most doves were found on Cty Road K @/near the farm at fire number 33658. On Mill Coulee off St. Hwy 35 several song sparrows and blue birds were found. No belted kingfisher today. He was last seen two weeks ago. Eagles were found near open water, by the two bridges mentioned above, west of downtown Prairie du Chien, at the Winneshiek Marina, near the nest sites along Cty Rd K and in Mill Coulee, and at Cty Rd N and St Hwy 27. The eagles at N and 27 were feeding on field spread commercial fisherman fish carrion or in adjacent trees. With the visit being near 3 p.m. not a lot of eagles were present. Counted 18. I would suspect more eagles at mid morning after they come off roost. Also saw two kestrels and a northern shrike on wires along Cty Rd N. Not a bad day for a short ride around the area.
