Good afternoon folks, despite the cool clammy conditions of this morning,
there was still plenty of activity to be seen. Chose a different locality this
time, the place:
Hickory/Oaks Campground. A real nice 5 to 8 acre sized woods, about 1/2 mile
north of North High along Vinland Rd. ( Would you say so, Bettie, 5 - 8?)
Lots of singing
going on, but mostly non-warbler species. Warblers singing were yellow-rumps,
B &W,
Nashville and ovenbird, that I could detect, but the first one seen, aside
from the YR's
was an ORANGE-CROWNED, then Gnatcatchers came into view, 3 of them, RC
kinglet,
INDIGO BUNTING, RB grosbeak, orioles galore, Savannah sparrows in he field next
to the woods,
but no flycatchers or thrushes that I was able to see or hear, but still a real
nice place to bird.
As for the festivities on Saturday, I believe a good time was had by all at
the Bird Fest
that is if you enjoy the company of lakeflies and cool winds off of the lake.
We had 2 Sits with the
help of Anita Carpenter at the Lake-view Site, with some trees, and the other
was led by Tom Ziebell,
who was in much further and away from the wind and in and amongst oaks and
maples, where all the warblers and many cedar waxwings were. He ended up with
near 60 sps, whereas Anita, God bless her and her devotion and heavy jacket,
got somewhere near 40. Only 1 warbler at her site, a Yellow-rump. Birds
overall? Nothing really outstanding, like the Northen Mockingbird we had last
year, but the best of the warblers seen and/or heard were Blackburnian and a
singing, yet somewhat obscured Cape May. An ovenbird was heard, strangely, out
on the island. Birders Clark Lindo and John Rudy-rudy ( that right,?) among
perhaps a dozen others, including the Kellermans from Milw. helped out, and on
behalf of Anita and Tom, I thank everyone for their help. And I should also
mention, before I get yelled at, Bettie Harriman was present as well, although
she was out of the wind and lakeflies, being the receptionist (?) for the
birdfest.
Additions or corrections?
Respectfully submitted,
Paul Bruce
