[wisb] Re: Loggerhead Shrikes in St. Croix County

Regarding the Henslow's Sparrow: I was curious about this too, because the
singing Henslow's Sparrow along the Horicon Marsh auto tour
was still at it yesterday. According to The Birds Of North America online,
nesting continues into August . With this summer's warm weather, they
probably want to try a second nesting.

Subject: [wisb] Loggerhead Shrikes in St. Croix County

On a drive east of Hudson yesterday on the road that forms the southern
border of Kerber Wildlife Mgmt area along Hwy 65, my father and I observed
two juvenile and one adult Loggerhead Shrike. The juveniles were following
the adult around and it was obvious that this was a family group and the
juveniles were still hanging around. The juveniles had brown caps vs the
gray of the adult, and there was still a little brown in the upper chest
area as well. This is the same location we observed a single adult
Loggerhead Shrike in late April of this year.
It has been a couple of years since I have seen successful breeding for this
species in ST. Croix County.
Also of note, was a very early migrating Tennessee Warbler near Boardman, WI
and a singing Henslow's Sparrow. Seemed very late for that species. There
were many singing Indigo Buntings.
The swallows are flocing up, with large flocks of Barn and Cliff Swallows
and good numbers of Purple Martins.
