This morning I took a quick drive around Staples Lake on the Barron/Polk County Line. I first stopped to check out a Horned Grebe, and then noticed a raft of ducks made up of Scaup and Redheads. A little further out was a small group of dark ducks. I got out a scope....4 SURF SCOTERS! I called my friend Nate Carlson who quickly went out there an hour or so later. He confirmed the sighting and also saw 3 more! He got some nice pictures as they were closer to shore than when I was there. He also said there were a few RUDDY DUCKS present. Also present on the lake were Pied Billed Grebe, American Wigeon, Wood Ducks, a female Canvasback (embarassing FOY) and 6 Trumpeter Swans. Great day to be birding!
