Oh, and of course thank you also to the National Fish and Wildlife Service
for actually allowing the access.

Jeff,

I just wanted to say Thank You, for all the work that you and the Horicon
Marsh Bird Club has been doing over the past couple of years to make Horicon
Marsh more accessible for birding. I was checking out Google Earth and I'm
really excited to walk the west side of Dike Road it looks like there is
some nice habitat to walk.

Thank You
Terry Leasa

*Mayville* - Project Leader Patti Meyers of Horicon National Wildlife
Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, announced today that
the entire Refuge will be open for wildlife observation and photography via
cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and bicycling from December 1
through March 15 each year. Also, new this year, Main Dike Road, including
the previously closed west section, will be open year-round for hiking and
bicycling.

According to Meyers, these changes were developed during the Comprehensive
Conservation Planning process. She explains that "wildlife observation and
nature photography are important and valuable activities for Refuge visitors
and are priority, wildlife dependent uses approved by the National Wildlife
Refuge Improvement Act of 1997. However, these uses must be compatible with
refuge purposes, which for Horicon National Wildlife Refuge are the
protection and preservation of migratory birds."

After March 15, public use will be restricted to designated areas in order
to minimize human disturbance to the birds. The designated areas for
visitor access will be Main Dike Road, the Auto Tour and Hiking Trail
Complex, the Bud Cook Hiking Area, Highway 49 Viewing Area and the three
fishing sites. Old Marsh Road will continue to be open on weekends in June,
July and August for hiking and bicycling.

Visitors are reminded that everything is protected on the Refuge, so
collection of berries, nuts, shed antlers, or anything else is not
permitted. Dogs must be on a leash unless engaged in hunting. Visitors are
strongly encouraged to obtain a Refuge map. Visitors should be aware that
other activities, such as trapping and hunting, may be ongoing. Parking
areas are limited and visitors should respect private property. Visitors
are encouraged to use the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource's Island
Road parking lot for access to Main Dike Road from the west side. A trail
leads north from the parking lot to Main Dike road. The refuge is open
during daylight hours only.

At 21,000 acres in size, Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Refuge encompasses the northern
two-thirds of Horicon Marsh and is part of America's National Wildlife
Refuge System, a network of federal public lands covering 150 million acres
with at least one Refuge in each state, 550 Refuges total.

For more information or to obtain a map, visitors should call 920/387-2658 x
12, check the website at http://www.fws.gov/midwest/horicon or write/visit
the Refuge office at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, W4279 Headquarters
Road, Mayville, WI 53050.
