I had very good birding for awhile this morning at Harrington Beach State Park. I saw 1 Pacific Loon, 3 Red-throated Loons, at least 6 Common Loons, 2 Surf Scoters, numerous Horned Grebes, and hundreds of Red-breasted Mergansers. A Bufflehead swam near shore and Redheads flew north. Six Sanderlings briefly worked the beach. Betsy Abert and I both reported Tree Sparrows two days ago. No slow, prolonged migration for these little guys. Today they were the most abundant sparrow in the park. I don't want anyone to get too excited about the Pacific Loon. I had intermittent looks at it from about 11:45 A.M. to 12:15 P.M. It preened for about 8 minutes allowing me to change its ID from probable to confirmed, but after it dove at 12:15, I could not relocate it despite searching for about 15 minutes. Coincidentally, the sun came out , the weather got beautiful, and the birding got lousy. I think what I experienced was a movement of migrants passing with the weak weather front. There were many "teaser" birds flying by, too far out for me to identify. I doubt if it can be relocated, but the Pacific Loon was seen about 300-350 yards out from the southernmost picnic area. I needed the 60X on my zoom to get all the pertinent field marks. This park has always been exciting and bears watching this fall and winter.
