[wisb] Frautschi Point, Dane Co, 83 species in 2.5 hours

Hey all-
Thanks to the incredible conditions for a fallout last night, my wife and I
had an amazing morning on Frautschi Point today. We arrived around seven by
bike - on the way we had a displaying turkey gobbler, a first for the
Lakeshore Preserve for me. The whole bike ride we were hearing warbler
songs, and it was immediately clear there was a big movement of birds
overnight. There were high concentrations of birds in Bill's Woods, but
visibility was poor. We moved to Frautschi, crossing the community garden,
and headed into the woods. HUGE numbers of warblers, all singing their
heads off. I ebirded 200 Palms and 300 Myrtles, making a sort of base group
of 500 warblers, but I don't think that does this justice. There were birds
everywhere, but as is typical here the highest concentrations were along
the shore between Frautschi and Second Point, and near the Big White Oak.

We hit 23 species of warblers. Highlights here included a HOODED WARBLER (a
first in Wisconsin for me, leaving me with only Connecticut to see to get
all the regular Wisconsin warblers...), a CAPE MAY WARBLER, a couple of
BLACKPOLLS (pretty early), great numbers of Golden-winged Warblers, a good
handful of Blue-winged Warblers, a BREWSTER's Hybrid, many many
Black-and-White Warblers (I feel like 30 is an underestimate), 3 Ceruleans
singing in different places, and a few other Setophagas. There were four
vireo species, and tons of other passerine migrants like Bunting,
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, orioles, and Least and Great-crested Flycatchers. 5
flyover Green Herons were also obvious migrants. Anya saw one RUBY-THROATED
HUMMNGBIRD (after that first wave of a few reports back in March, I have
noticed that reports have basically ceased until now).

Today and tomorrow should produce LOTS of cool birds, expected and un(?) in
southern Wisconsin.

Good birding!
