After a long day of very quiet birding, Quentin Yoerger and I found a FRANKLIN'S GULL between first-year and adult plumage at the large soccer fields to the south of University Bay Dr. This is just west of the 1918 marsh and parking lot for Picnic Point. It was the only gull and was sitting with 5 Canada Geese while people played soccer close by-- weird. The nearby Snow Goose was present at the baseball diamond just west of the UW Natatorium. It is marked correctly for a Snow Goose and has both halluxes but seemed to be about 90% of the size of the giant Canadas it was with, was very chunky, and very tame. Something doesn't seem quite right...ideas?? Other highlights from our day in Iowa and Sauk Counties were an Olive-sided Flycatcher at Bakken's Pond (Sauk), 3 Cerulean Warblers at Devils Lake State Park (Sauk), one Hooded Warbler on South Shore Rd in Devils Lake State Park, the singing Northern Mockingbird at Spring Green Conservancy (Sauk), and 3 Bells Vireos, an Alder Flycatcher, and both Cuckoos at Governor Dodge State Park (Iowa). It was nice to cross paths with Brian and Becky a couple times throughout the day.
