We've been using thin wire, with several pieces hanging down from each
feeder, with fairly good results, since last winter. We have a "ton" of
house sparrows in the neighborhood (well, at least a few dozen), and
they have little problem using feeders without perches, such as our
peanut feeder.

The wire we used was stuff we pulled out of old calendars and
straightened as best we could. We weighted them down a bit with nuts (as
in nuts and bolts).
