(I'm not sure if this is noteworthy, but it's the first I've seen here.)
Sixteen students and two TAs from the Birds of Wisconsin class at the
UW saw a COMMON MOORHEN this morning at Nine Springs in Madison.
Thanks goes out to Malcolm for joining our group briefly and pointing
out the moorhen.
We also got good looks at a couple of SORAS and a couple of LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS. Five of the six swallows were found (no martins); we totaled
62 species for the morning.
Six warbler species were also seen: TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER,
PALM WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT. The only shorebirds seen were Killdeer and three SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS.

On a side note, this past Sunday our students had a field trip to
Governor Dodge State Park and witnessed a female Bald Eagle flying low
over Twin Lake clutching a partially eaten drake Mallard from one
talon. This morning, on the railroad tracks adjacent to the bike path
just east (~200 ft.) of Mills Street in Madison, three of us observed
a Red-tailed Hawk on one track, with a dead hen Mallard under one
foot. A crow was a couple of feet away. At one point the hawk looked
like it was trying to take off with the Mallard, but it only made it
about four feet away to the next track.
