Hi all, I made several stops in N. Dane and S. Columbia Counties today. My best bird was a male SMITH'S LONGSPUR present in a flock of approximately 100 longspurs that repeatedly flew over me as I was scoping shorebirds at the Harvey/Wangsness Road (Columbia Co.) mudflats. I saw the bird in flight and was able to pick out the conspicuous white lesser coverts on the bird as it flew past. I spotted this this bird a couple times as it flew over. Unfortunately I could not find it in my scope when the flock would land in distant fields. Other notable birds today... A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was spotted from Kampen Road while looking at the north end of Goose Pond. Also present were a pair of sharp-looking breeding plumaged STILT SANDPIPERS and 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES. Other species present at both Wangsness/Harvey Rd Pond and Goose Pond include: Both yellowlegs Dunlin Pectoral Sandpipers Solitary Sandpiper American Pipits--20+ at both locations A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was present in Arlington today. This morning in the Madison Arboretum: HOODED WARBLER--in the typical location--Lost City Forest--the bird was seen about 20 yards west from the survey marker in the middle of the trail.
