About 8:15 tonight, I had just gotten home and was filling the bird feeders in the back yard when I heard a flat "breent" from down the block, up high. I had one of those first-time-in-spring moments where I thought "I know that sound", as it continued and flew past my yard about a half-block away. It suddenly hit me - Nighthawk! I ran around the house, but could not get visual confirmation through all the trees, but I'm positive on the ID (definitely not a Woodcock.) I went for a short walk at Lake Farm Park tonight, after going over to see the Black-crowned Night Herons on Wingra Creek near the east entrance to the UW Arboretum (still two there, on a snag on the lagoon near the bridge. No Red-necked Grebe on Lake Wingra that I could see.) At Lake Farm, I walked out as far as the second shelter on the lake trail. Had several FOY birds, including Lincoln's Sparrow, No. Waterthrush, Scarlet Tanager (the first one I've ever seen there, as far as I can recall,) Gray Catbird and Veery (the last two heard only.) Also had a Winter Wren, several BG Gnatcatchers, Yellow-rumped, Palm and Yellow Warblers, and a flyover Osprey. The Brown Thrasher was in fine voice, as usual.
