After a rather slow morning on Wisconsin Point, most birders had left by 10:30 or so. An immature Parasitic Jaeger gave us one last close flyby before Dan Doeppers and I headed back to Madison via the Brule River State Forest. Stone's Bridge was very quiet in the late morning, although I did see an Eastern Towhee just north of the bridge. About a half-mile south on County S, a flock of sparrows flushed off the roadside, so we stopped to check them out. There were at least two dozen birds, and they were constantly moving south through the trees and shrubs as we tried to keep up with them. It didn't help that we were looking directly into the sun at that point, but we could tell that at least half of them were Chippies, with a couple of White-throats, a Clay-colored, a Field, and a Junco or two. Could easily have been something else in with them. Just when they finally hit a spot where they were coming back out onto the roadside, they all flushed back into cover. I imme diately looked up and saw a large, bulky accipiter glide over. Dan yelled "Goshawk!" It was completely backlit, so we couldn't see any plumage details, but I grabbed my Ligouri book and had to agree that the profile was all wrong for Cooper's. Still, I was reluctant to count it, since this was my state nemesis bird. A few minutes later, we were driving through some excellent-looking Sharp-tailed Grouse habitat on Jersett Rd., a mile or two southwest of the previous location. Dan jokingly said something about how neat it would be if a Goshawk came down and grabbed a Sharp-tail. Literally a few seconds after that, a large, evenly-streaked light-brown hawk flushed off the roadside and flew off over the scrub and into the woods. Dan said "There's your Goshawk!" as I slammed on the brakes and we jumped out of the car, but we couldn't find it in the trees. After more consultation with Sibley, I was willing to accept that one. Surprisingly, we saw very few hawks overall on the trip. We had one flurry of Bald Eagles in Barron Co. on the way up, but almost nothing on the way back south today (not even many Turkey Vultures soaring today.) As usual, Jaegerfest was great - big thanks to Tom, Daryl, Robbye and all the other WisBirders and WSO folks who make it such a fun weekend. Hope those of you who couldn't make it this year can join us next time!
