WSO just received a report with photos of a FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER seen much of yesterday (6/17/12) just outside of Algoma in Kewaunee County. I just spoke by phone with the landowner/observer, Jeff Swagel, and he has granted permission for birders to come look for the bird. He was at work most of the day and is not sure if it is still around or not. Two of his photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32706210@N05/7396837014/in/pool-wisconsinebird http://www.flickr.com/photos/32706210@N05/7396837190/in/pool-wisconsinebird/ The address is N7191 Brietlow Road, Algoma, WI. This is a short (reverse) L-shaped road that runs south off Cty Hwy K. The Swagel's home is at the end of the road. The bird, however, was seen at the curve in the "L". Jeff suggests visitors look from the road right at the curve. His only requests are that BIRDERS DO NOT VENTURE OFF THE ROAD and they act respectful of people and property when present. Here are some pertinent aspects of his WSO Report-- Species: Fork Tailed Flycatcher Location: N7191 Brietlow Road, Kewaunee County, 2 miles east of Rio Creek East end of property along power lines Observation Date: 06/17/2012 Observation Time: 10:00 am Bird was observed on four different occasions during a span of about 9 hours Last seen at about 7:15 PM Length of observation: total of about 45 minutes over period of 9 hours Distance to bird: closest was at 30 yards Weather conditions: Sunny to partly cloudy, clear Behavior: Perched on power wires and very topmost twigs of several weeping birches on property. When it flew, it would dip somewhat every 3-5 feet and the tail was splayed out in a vee. It flew directly overhead on two occasions about 20 feet up. It would not allow me to approach much closer than 30 yards without flying to a different perch. Specific habitat: My land is 5 semi-open acres with many trees, surrounded on all sides by open farmland which is currently planted with hay. There are some small woodlots located about 3/8 mi to the north, and a larger woodland/swamp area of around 120 acres 3/8 mile to the west, There is a very small woodlot 1/2 mile to the south, and a larger woods and lake 1 mile to the east.
