I took advantage of the perfect weather this morning to run my marshbird survey at White River Marsh in Green Lake County. Numbers of American Bitterns were impressive (I heard 13) but I didn't hear the Yellow Rail that was present a couple weeks ago. During my survey I was taunted by warbler song in the adjacent woods and I could tell it was a good morning for migrants. After my survey I worked the warbler flocks from 8am until a little after 11am and it was definitely one of my best days in recent memory. Highlights included a singing CONNECTICUT, 2 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 4 BAY-BREASTED, 4 MOURNING WARBLERS, and 5 CERULEANS (on territory). Numbers of Tennessee, Blackpoll, Black-throated Green, and Blackburnian were some of the best I have ever seen in one spot. It was funny to see all these warblers and only 2 Yellow-rumps and no Palms. I have attached my full Ebird checklist from the morning which details the conservative estimates of each species. Early this afternoon I found a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at Grand River Marsh (Marquette County portion) in the bottomland forest just south of the dam and a Hooded Warbler on the south side of CTY O a couple miles east of CTY F (Marquette Cty). These and a couple Pine Warblers on territory gave me 28 species of warblers for the day. A very fun day, especially after how quiet this past week has been.
