"Shunting" through linked ears is a possibility... an image distortion due
to impedance imbalance between the ears (see the paper by Rosenfeld in the
JNT about this).   You might try remontaging to a Laplacian montage and see
if the areas of voltage suppression remain.

The linked ears are a poor method of seeing local function (Ian Cook, et
al., 1998, UCLA NPI Lab).
