Forget the format question as FAT32 will actually support upto 2Tb partition
size so it's really gotta be the controller in the unit ?

Not really. I bought that case maybe two years ago. It's was a
cheap no-name thingie.

You think it may not completely adhere to the usb2 standard, ie
it's a hardware issue?

What brand on the usb2-cradle do you use?
