Your comments have led me to resolve most of the problems we were having. One of the problems appeared to be caused by the external facing network card having a higher priority than the internal network card. I corrected this, and removed the file and printer sharing binding from it. We aren't running a WINS server. The global catalog error I mentioned hasn't occurred since.
