Yeah, so I've seen.  Thanks to everyone on here who responded.  Your
comments have led me to resolve most of the problems we were having.  One of
the problems appeared to be caused by the external facing network card
having a higher priority than the internal network card.  I corrected this,
and removed the file and printer sharing binding from it.

We aren't running a WINS server.

The global catalog error I mentioned hasn't occurred since.
