[windows2000] SUS and server self-update?

I have installed SUS Server on a Windows 2000 Adv. Server test machine with
SP3. I wanted to also install SUS client I could have the server apply
patches to itself, but SUS complains that SP2 is not installed, yet I have
SP3 already installed.
How have people patched a built server after SUS server has been installed?
Can it be self-patched?
