definitely, more ram will make the difference if it takes 25 minutes or 9 hours
to run. The couple times I've had to run it on fairly large pst files, I had to
change the virtual memory settings on the machine to get it to run quicker. The
machines were standard with 128, but I set the virtual memory to be a static
size bigger than the pst file. Worked wonders.

Then just set it back when you're done

I've used it without any bother, always backup first and the more RAM on the
machine the better.

Cheers

I was told by someone in our department that scanpst rarely works, and will
mess up the users inbox most of the time. Is this true?

Eddie,

If you suspect a corrupt .pst file try using the Inbox Repair Tool
(scanpst.exe).
It's located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT on Win2k
box.

See http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm

I looked at the users .pst file and it's only 700 megs. The entire mailbox
size is 1.5 gigs. Were you referring to the mailbox size or the .pst size.
There isn't a limit on the mailbox size, right? So if all this is true,
then the size of the .pst or mailbox should not be causing the problem.
It's probably corrupted. Any ideas on other things I could try to fix the
problem if it is in fact corrupted?

Eddie

I've seen this before when the problem was as simple as Outlook just not
"refreshing" the message list. Close Outlook and re-open it and see if
the messages are still there. They may have already been moved.

Another thing to look at is the size of the pst file he's moving the
messages to. Is it approaching 2GB? 2GB is the limit for a pst, but
problems can start happening as soon as 1GB is reached sometimes.

p.s. What does this have to do with Windows 2000?
