If you heard the drive *ping*, check your power settings..??  Perhaps
it's configured to power down unused drives after a period of time? 
Dunno what else it could be, aside from a hardware malfunction..

Again, though, I'd recommend checking with Maxtor to find out about
the SMART information being incorrect..  You should be able to provide
them with the serial number of the drive and they can give you the
date of manufacture and whether or not it was sold as new or
refurbished...

Also, what did you pay for the drive?  Chances are if you got a deal
that was "too good to be true", it was, and it's a re-furb.  If you
paid market rate, then it's either brand new, or you got ripped off...
