Agreed. Working on that now... I suspect the accuracy is more important to them - which means I'll have to do a short rewrite and search within the whole name field.... -----Original Message----- From: windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Costanzo, Ray Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2003 11:07 AM To: windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] Re: OT: Programming question Yes, to me, what it sounds like is you will have to decide which is more important, data accuracy, or user friendliness. Having the first name and last name split into separate columns will make for a more user friendly application, but it will not be 100% accurate. I'd go for the accuracy, probably. And if someone wants to search by last name, you can do %searchText, as you suggested. I recently had to do something similar. Our current helpdesk application, www.helpstar.com, is such that all of our users are in the DB. But, there is simple a "name" column in the DB. There is no first name, last name, etc. We're moving to an AS/400 based application, and that needed first name and last name. So, I generated a file that was 90% accurate, and those that are wrong will have to be manually updated as they are discovered. That was good enough for me. :] Ray at work > -----Original Message----- > From: Rick Fogarty [mailto:rick@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] > Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2003 10:17 AM > To: windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: [windows2000] Re: OT: Programming question > > > Yeah, it's unfortunate...
