[windows2000] Gigabit over copper

My understanding is that the cabling in my building needs to be Cat5E
instead of just plain Cat5 for gigabit Ethernet.
What happens is the cabling is the plain cat5 and I plug a gigabit nic
to the gigabit switch? Does it just run at 100bT or does it not run at
all? Somewhere in between?
Thanks!
Greg
