you can do it either way.  I run mine on the exchange server but they include 
directions for how to run it on its own box.

I also have trend scanmail for exchange on the same box with it and it all runs 
fine.

GFI MAil Essentials 9. it stops about 95% of it with very few false
positives and it learns as it goes.  They have a demo you can download for
free.

We have been running it for about 6 months now and have been very pleased.
