hmm Sounds like someone has swapped the executable. Do this. Right click on
the file while holding down the shift key.
Choose open with and other program. In the popup choose other and navigate
to word. Check the box to always use this program to open and see if that
fixes it.

That's cool, didn't even know about that menu, doesn't solve the problem
though.  The file type is already associated with OpenOffice, and that works
fine if you double-click a file, it's just when he tries to use open with,
if he selects MS Word, he gets wordpad.
