[windows2000] Re: Active Directory Migration Tool

My suggestion:

Take a machine that will run Windows 2000 server.  It does not need to run
it well, just run it adequately.

1. Install NT4 on it, and make it a BDC for the existing domain.
2. Remove it from the network, but leave it attached to a hub (so that the
NIC does not think it is unplugged)
3. Using server manager, promote it to PDC.
4. Upgrade it to Windows 2000 server, and allow DCPromo to run after the
install.
5. Assuming all is well, re-attach it to the network.
6. On the pre-existing NT4 PDC, use server manager to demote it to a BDC.
7. Remove the now-demoted former PDC from the domain.
8. Clean install Win2K server on the old PDC, making it a member of the new
active directory which is temporarily hosted on the other machine.
9. Run DCPromo and make it a second domain controller in the same active
directory.
10. Run DCPromo on the "temporary" machine and demote it to a member server.
This should transfer the FSMO roles automatically, but you may want to
transfer them manually.  If you don't know how, just ask.
11. Remove the temporary machine from the domain.

At the end you should have an active directory that is an upgraded version
of your old NT4 domain, but no servers that have been "Upgraded"

This is called a Swing Upgrade, because you swing the account database onto
a temporary machine, and then swing it back after you've rebuilt the
original machine.

Hi List,
 
Anyone ever use the Windows 2000 Active Directory Migration Tool to go from
NT 4.0 to 2000 server?  I have a client who is doing that, but they are
going from NT 4.0 server (SP 6a) to 2000 server (SP3) on the same box.  They
want the installation of 2000 to be a clean install.  So here's my question.
Does the AD Migration Tool need to have the nt 4.0 domain and the 2000 AD
domain running at the same time to do the migration, or can it do something
like, run on the NT 4.0 box, save all the domain stuff (sids, user accounts,
passwords, etc . . .) into a file or whatever and then do the import into AD
when the 2000 box is built?
